It works fine with my portable generator, though you need to shut the hatch and keep the weatherboard in place to get maximum cooling effect
Hi Andrew.

Any Pics of that a/c mod !

An ETEC-60 alternator is rated to deliver up to 81 amps, which at 12 volts is very nearly 1000 watts. Is there an issue with just running the outboard in neutral as a generator, besides the fact that it's likely quite a bit less efficient than a built-to-purpose generator?

You have start up current that is quit a bit more than when running. I have a 2000W Honda Generator and if activate the economy button which reduces the rpm s to match the loads put on it. With the AC running I will hear the generator increasing to maximum shortly every time the compressor kicks in then it backs down a little then a lot once the compressor kicks off.

I installed a Mermaid 16,500 BTU Air conditioner/heater on my C34 back in 2005, it is quite doable and I am sure you would have no problems with the install. Remember to add the cost of a good big strainer, salt water pump, two thru hulls and some ductwork to the price. The strainer, pump and associated hoses take a surprising amount of room. Another issue for the Mac would be the condenser water that is pulled from the air, on the Catalina I just ran a drain into the bilge and the pump took care of it.

Good luck,
Mark

I am looking into running the condesate pan drain line back to the ballast tank. A short run of tubing right into the top of the ballast tank with a isolation valve would work, I would think. The unit will sit on the stbd V berth side of the ballast tank. I am also looking into placing the seawater pump just outboard the ballast tank wall outboard and aft of the V berth. I would make a penetration in the ballast tank wall for the pump suction so it can be below the waterline. I will end up with just a thru-hull for the seawater overboard. My seawater inlet will be the ballast tank gate valve.

Can someone fact check that please? Seems high. 200 Watts would be a more typical rating for a motor of this size

agreed the etec's are very simular to the tohutsu's at about 250-280 watts. I think he must have been reading his chevy p/u manual at the time and got confused with his data.
