40hp Four Stroke
I need to replace the 40hp Johnson two stroke that came with my Mac19 back in 1992. Has anyone actually put a 40hp Mercury four stroke on a Mac 19 without any modifications to the boat? I ask because the four stroke is so much larger and heavier than the two stroke and I wonder whether the four stroke will fit and turn in the tramsom well. Other question: has anyone actually planed and discharged the ballast of a Mac19 using an outboard of less than 40 HP? I would appreciate responses from those with actual first hand experience only.

Re: 40hp Four Stroke
Not sure what the dimension and weight of the Merc is, but I have a 40HP Evinrude 4-stroke on my
with one minor modification required. That is the ballast tank valve .... the motor mount is larger so will interfere with the handle. I had to turn the valve so that the handle is more horizontal and I use a boat hook to open and close it. The weight of the motor (238lb) is not an issue ... been on the boat for 10 years now. The motor also cannot be completely tilted up because of the rudder/tiller bar but hasn't been an issue. One remedy would be to use a jack plate ... that would solve all these issues (do a search for Highlander to see his
mods).

My '93 2 stroke Tohatsu still runs great, but ask over at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/macgregor19sailboats/ I know some have 4 strokes.
