My tow ball is 2", but it might be slightly large. I have trouble getting the under latch to settle correctly.

Hello Kurz,

On my older :macx: steel trailer, the ball size is 2 inches, and the trailer rides at about 19 inches (give or take an inch). I have no problems with the latch (so far).

Fair Winds...

Most 1-7/8" hitch balls are only 2000 lb rated (though there are some that are rated higher, for some odd reason). Most couplers that only accept 1-7/8" balls are also only rated 2000 lb.

Titan surge brake couplers will accept 1-7/8", 2", and 50mm balls, and were used on the steel OEM :macx: trailers. Some use a knob you tighten against the ball once you're hooked up (instead of a lever), and can accept any ball on the fly (like U-Haul rental trailers), while the lever types require that you adjust the nut under the jaw to fit the ball size you have before you close the latch.

Being that it's a US made trailer of at least 3500 lb gross trailer weight, it's highly unlikely it's designed for anything other than 2", and may accept 50mm, which is only .032" 'undersized'. I would assume 50mm is relatively common in Europe - I've never seen one here, though.

Do you know the manufacturer of the coupler?

Hey mastreb! :D

I had the same issue, except mine would just not fit on at all, even though it regularly fit perfectly on two other trailers. I switched to a second ball (which was also newer) and it was fine, after adjustment. When I compared the two I found that the first one, instead of being perfectly spherical, was oblong, like an egg-shape standing on end. And it was beyond the range of adjustment of the screw underneath the socket. That was with the factory surge-brake arrangement, which has a somewhat non-conventional configuration of the socket.

I have a 2 inch ball. A first ball I tried didn't work, found out the neck was not long enough. The space from the ball down to the hitch needed to be a little taller, now it works like a charm every time.

Kurz

I remember from an Australian thread that one owner had trouble between the 50 mm and 2 inch ball being slightly different he could not get a tight connection between boat and trailer.

Kurz
they are supplied 2 inch. I got my trailer still with the US tow hitch on and it was used on my and the POs 50mm balls for the first 4 years with no issues. I recently put a 50mm hitch on the trailer mainly because a) its illegal to have the imperial hitch and b) US tow hitches do not have hand breaks.

The new blue bit is because the original had rusted through. I have now rust treated the inside of this and painted it black like the original.
