MacGregor Leaning
Hello,
We have owned a 1995 MacGregor 26X and enjoy it very much. The boat has many modifications and is well organized.
One issue that we have is that the boat appears to have a permanent lean to the left (port) by a couple of degrees. Our batteries are on the port side, but I keep our fuel tank on the starboard side normally full. All in all, I cannot find a particiular item that should shift the center of gravity to one side. The boat behaves the same whether the water ballast is in or not. The rigging appears to be all symmetrical and straight.
It has not been a big issue, and the primary passengers typically just sit on the starboard side which straightens out the boat, yet I still would like to solve it if possible.
Has anyone else noted a similar issue? If so, is there a particular cause or reason for this to happen which I may have overlooked?
Appreciate any help and suggestions

Re: MacGregor Leaning
I wish I could help you, but I've noticed the same thing with my '99
, and I don't know why it does that. Batteries are on the port side, but no water in the little fresh water tank next to the galley. Water in the porta-potti on the starboard side. Table on the starboard side, too, though that may not have been there last year when I first noticed it. Engine is centered. Winds off the stern mostly, though it will heel noticably with a bit of breeze over the rail.

Do you have an extra anchor or chain anywhere? What's stored under your v-berth and aft berth? The port side is where all the under-seat storage is, so my guess would be that you've just got the sum of your batteries and all your gear on one side of the boat.

I'm glad someone raised this question as we have the same situation on our 2001X. As with others, we checked how weight was distributed and found nothing unusual. Could there be something in the ballast tank? I'll go back and review the cheek errr rather the check list.

Re: MacGregor Leaning
Water ballasted boats like Macs are tender and every pound of weight will heel them significantly when level, in contrast with classic keel boats.

Re: MacGregor Leaning
How Many Batteries are on Port side? I have two group 29 house batteries just aft of Vberth that are centered both Port And Starboard. I have a aft starter battery aft port side and a 11 gal. water tank. Starbord side I have a 66 quart refig. and Ice chest under seat that weighs when loaded same as the house battery and 11 gal. water. I set on a level boat with no one aboard.
Just a mater of putting equel weight on both sides.
I must say I think the boat beats to windward on a port tack better, maybe because I am right handed.

Are you holding your tongue right?
(You're not tilting your head, are you?)
And where did you mount your henweigh? That might be the problem...

Re: MacGregor Leaning
Well,
appreciate all your feedback. It appears that some other MacGregor owners have the same issue.
I did look at all weight in the boat (batteries, water tank, anchors etc) to distribute as evenly as possible. Next I may move my batteries to the other side and see if this helps.
I thought thee may be some kind of flaw or design reason for this to happen, but it appears from everyones feedback that it only has to do with weight distribution.

Having the same situation, I moved my second house battery to the starboard side aft if the head. That helped.

Re: MacGregor Leaning
My boat has a permanent list to whichever side the admiral is sitting on. She gets quite upset when I ask her to move her ballast.
