Help! sewing leach line back into leach

Post by DaveC426913 »

The storm took my furled genoa and split the leach up about 20 feet. It's more complicated than I thought to sew it back together.

Here is a photo and a cross-sectional diagram of my leach.

There are a total of six layers.
  • Furling canvas (blue) is bonded to a layer of light canvas or tape. (It is marked by the silver paperlcip)
  • Then there's one layer of light canvas/tape, which is frayed as if torn along its length. (green paperclip)
  • Then there's a second layer of light canvas/tape; this one has a clean edge, as if manufactured that way - no tearing. (pink paperclip)
  • Finally, there's a layer of canvas/tape bonded to the sail canvas itself. (blue paperclip)
All of these protrude the same amount - about 1/2" - from the stitching. This mean I can't really tell which ones are meant to wrap around the leach line.

I'm going to go out and buy a roll of sail tape (I think you get it with a crease along its length, yes?) but I don't know what I'm sewing together.

1] Which pair do I slip the leach line inside of?
2] Which pair or pairs do I sew together?

Maybe have a talk to sailrite and show the sailmaker that picture
If you go onto their forum you may get some help there

Dave...these are really cheap end run material sails and not worthy of spending too much money on to fix. I taped my genny one year and then bought a new one the following year.

All IMHO

I agree best to buy a new head sail. Mine split the same way and I repaired it with sail tape and sailed for two seasons but the sail material finally became so brittle it split up the leach line a least 5m. :macx:

Oh... :o
It would never have occurred to me to buy a new one. Repair will probably be in the hundreds.

How much should I expect to pay for a new one? I see the ones from Mac go for $425.

Last sail, last week, the leach line popped out of my Genoa as well. I didn't know about "Sail tape". I need a few "sliders", so it's probably a good time to replace them and tape up the leach (and start saving)

Price out a new from bill , look at other options from the banner vendors here..

Boat parts have been known to have been sailed from our club in Wilson to the Toronto area to avoid shipping fees too....

Give Judy at Hyde Sails of Northern California a call. Just bought a working jib and a mainsail the quality of sail material and construction of the sails are probably 4 times better than the OEM sails.
Found her pricing very competitive but it takes quite a while to get the product, ordered in February got them mid June other than that no complaints.

Mod note....Hyde Sails is a board advertiser, see above banner

Took it to a local loft. For $175 they removed and resewed the entire leach and foot (which has had rotting stitches.)

Definitely the best solution.

No actual MacGregor sails there at the moment (that I could see). You'll have to just go by size
or maybe call them.
