Holy City (Charleston, SC) Mac Roundup

Post by fishheadbarandgrill »

Gauging interest in a Charleston, SC weekend sail. Some ideas to think about below. Suggest a Fall or Spring date to avoid the heat, humidity and winged creatures.

Launch and Recover
- Launch and recover suggested at Remleys Point Boat Ramp (operated by SC Dept of Natural Resources)
- There is a 72 hour limit for car and trailer parking at DNR boat ramps but with a Thursday arrival and Sunday departure, everyone should be within that window.
- You Tube link showing the ramp area. http://youtu.be/g4ymHrQqEV0
- Link to Remly Point description https://www.dnr.sc.gov/mlands/boatramp_details?p_id=340
- It’s about a 2.5nm transit from Remleys Point to the City Marina

Marina
- Suggest the Charleston City Marina. http://www.charlestoncitymarina.com/. Lynn and I have stayed there and they have great service, facilities, you can walk downtown or they have a shuttle bus.
- Once we nail down a date, I will see if I can negotiate a group rate and have them reserve slips close to each other.

Suggested Itinerary (this 4 day itinerary provides an opportunity for those that may want to see more of the city)
- Thursday -- Travel to Charleston, launch boat and transit to the City Marina
- Friday –- Travel to Charleston, launch boat and transit to the City Marina. For those arriving Thursday, open day to sail the harbor and/or explore downtown Charleston. Social and Captains meeting around 6pm at Salty Mikes at the City Marina where we can have a brief Captain’s meeting for Saturday then hang at the marina or head into town.
- Saturday –- Sailing day. Inner harbor, up the Wando River or out to sea through the jetties. We can anchor for lunch or pull in to Shem Creek (http://shemcreeksc.com/). The Town of Mount Pleasant just built a huge floating pier for day docking. Return to City Marina Saturday afternoon. Saturday night open for dinner in town, hang out at marina, etc.
- Sunday –- Recover and return travel.

Notes:
- Travel time is about 5 hours from Raleigh to Charleston (I-95 to I-26) and 6 hours from New Bern (US 17) to Charleston We have bugs and humidity

Sounds like fun, the admiral and I would possibly be interested but we couldn't make it until Friday afternoon. As Erik says "Any excuse for a sail" :)

im on 50 acres a mile and a half from a great ramp if any body wanted to come earlier or stay longer it would be no problem to shuttle to the ramp its about 5 or 6 mile run to the harbor from the ramp ,but i have plenty of room for parking for as long as needed .....you would not have to worry about leaving car and trailers at a public ramp .im not involved in planning but we have some great islands to hop around for maybe a beach party or cook out one night ..backside of morris island or backside of kiawah ........

Regret Jim that I can't make the Annanpolis trip. It's on my bucket list though. I'll be trailering Syzygy up to the Lake Erie Islands on Saturday for a week of Great Lakes sailing. Hope you guys have some nice weather.

Bahama Bound (and other Charleston Mac Sailors),
lets get together offline and work up a plan. My ideas was generated a couple of months ago for a group in NC that was interested in coming down. Certainly welcome input, etc.

Cat - Got the note. Thanks

Bahama Bound - currently enroute to the Lake Erie Islands with my :macm: in tow. Will give you a shout mid-week.

Rich - Early discussions with NC based Mac Fleet indicate first wknd in October would work.

Second week of October sounds good. I like the idea of parking away from the boat ramp on private property. I am interested in attending.
