Florida Key Thoughts

Thanks for your kind invitation. It appears that the admiral is just stringing me along each year as she really does not want to go anywhere except where she is familiar. Fear or smart? Who knows? So, it looks like North Carolina this season just like all the other years and trips and all the future ones. My dreams of Florida and Bahamas and Maine and Erie Canal are just dreams I am realizing. But, I am on my boat a lot and I enjoy her (and her) so much that I guess I should just count my blessings and sail and boat for real in NC while my fantasies take me to other places. Admirals and SWMBO'd types are really the Master and Commmanders, aren't they? For those couples like Ruth and Sumner, others like us DO READ your adventures, even though it does not seem like it to you, I bet. Those trips like that, that many of you post here, are the meat of my Walter Mitty spells. Thanks, but no sympathy, please, since I get to use my boat very often.

We just got back from the Cayo Costa trip.
There were over 30 Trailer Sailor boats that went to the event and had great campfires Friday and Sat. night with about 40-45 persons around the campfire.
Just perfect weather and able to swim in 78 degree waters.
Will do a Log trip with photos of the trip.

I live down here in South Florida and rely on the "Cruising Guide to the Florida Keys" any time we venture further south. http://www.cruisingguidetothefloridakey ... a_keys.htm

I know that book comes highly recommended by this group, however, it was last published in 1998. Can anyone recommend another that might be a bit more recent?

I am looking at one titled "Cruising the Florida Keys" by Clairborne Young. I'm most interested in marinas, restaurants, things to see and do, things to avoid, etc.

The one by Pappy whoever is pretty good. The author still frequents key largo. Many things like land features etc don't change that much in a decade or so. I don't have a copy any more though but I used to.
Is there an interactive multi user chart where people could log in and share notes?

You might be interested in https://activecaptain.com if you have never tried them. We did not use them while we were in the keys earlier this year but use their info quite a bit when sailing our local lakes. We had such a blast exploring the Keys I really didn't want the input from others. It seemed like everyplace we stopped was a new found treasure.

Awesome sight Azzarac! I just wish it had more information about restaruants and things to do, but if you dig a little, you can find some. I think I will order Papy's book to use for things to see and do, and use Active Captain for current information on marinas, etc. Talk to the locals at the marina for restaurant suggestions...

The nice thing about ActiveCaptain is that if you find the information a bit sparse in areas you visit you can add your own experiences to it and make it better for the next guy, or remind you during future visits. It will also incorporate itself into some tablet chartplotter apps though I have not tinkered with that aspect enough to tell you which ones.
