Disconnect the rod at the turnbuckle at the top of the lower unit. You will need two small open end wrenches as one of the nuts acts as a jam nut. When reassembling the unit you may have to move your throttle and adjust it before retightening the jam nut.

Overheating Suzy 50

Post by Theo »

Hi Guys,

Add me to the list of those perplexed by the 2000 Suzuki 50. I had a similar problem where my pee steam became a mere trickle. Everyone told me there were two things I needed to do. 1) Change the impeller. (yes it is apparently an annual maintennce item) 2) Check the pee hole for blockage. I done both. Still no healthy stream.

My buddy and I took hef out for a spin yesterday and sure enough she overheated. Strangely though only after about 45 min at fairly high speed. (8 to 14 mph) For the experts, I forgot to open the air hole on the gas tank and the engine might have been running lean. Could this cause her to overheat?

Is it peoples overall experience that Suzukis are vulnerable to overheating? Any ideas? I am at a loss. :?

This is the same thing that is going on with my DF50. but i have not overheated yet. I went on line to Browns Point Marine (THANKS MOE) and from the parts manual I can see the complete cooling system. I think I am going to order the works, water pump repair kit (p/n 17400-96352) I am also thinking of valve, water press (p/n 17660-99E01) and the thermostat (p/n 17679-93962) Has any one done the pressure valve? If any body has so advice on this i would love to hear it.

I'll toss in one word of advice from the voice of experience. When replacing the impellor housing use a torque wrench or at least grab the socket wrench near the socket so as to not over-torque the four nuts that hold the impellor housing on the motor. The four pins that hold the impellor housing on are made of aluminum and can easily be stretched or broken.

Change the impeller each year, my 2000 50hp overheated and I blew the head. Water got in with the oil. Now each year I change the impeller regardless. It was under warranty, the dealer told me the cost is about $3,000.00 with labor when not under warranty. Brown's Point Marine did the work. Great place, George is a great guy to work with.
