Hurricane Timing S###s

Post by ROAD Soldier »

Hurricane Sandy is arriving 2 days to late. For my area around DC they are talking 30-70MPH winds with gusts higher then that :) . However it is going to be on a weekday and I have to work  . That would have been some awesome sailing on the Potomac8) .

The good is that if you still go sailing you will never have to work again.

The marina might not be there when you got back. Prolly have to reef the main though.

A hurricane makes aircraft carriers groups move away. You are talking more than 64 knots winds. A Cessna aircraft takes-of like an helicopeter from it's parking at that wind speed. You just push the throttel in the dash, pull on the column, and you are flying, even going backward at first. Wikipedia says: «Huge waves. Sea is completely white with foam and spray. Air is filled with driving spray, greatly reducing visibility».This is Beaufort 12, the top of the Beaufort scale.

Have fun!

We're ready here, but all the same I'm a wee bit worried... when you look on those maps that show the storm path, our house is quite literally right on the red storm path line. The main thing I'm really concerned about is the trees... they tend to fall over, and we have a LOT of trees.

Oh, I see, you have been trained to do the laundry and the dusting :D :D :D :D :D

As far as the weather and where I live - near Baltimore, MD - I am mainly worried about wind after a day of two of rain supersaturating the ground. That is when trees go down easily - I too have a bunch of very large trees and already way too much firewood. And I cannot get my    chainsaw started.

Yeah, we tested our chainsaw today as well, and I've got a gallon of mixed 2-stroke petrol all set to go as well. With dozens of towering tulip poplars all around the house (trees which have virtually no roots!), I *know* I'm going to be using it. I'm just hoping they don't fall on the house, but if they do we have a monster tarp at the ready (we use it for collecting and dragging leaves) and a box of roofing nails.

The problem with your saw is probably due to the ethanol in the fuel. The carb needs a good cleaning. I have started to use fuel without ethanol for all my small engines. (Here in Ontario you can get it at Shell only...? Its there highest octane and $.)
You should have seen the cr** in the bowl of my new lawnmower this spring! Yes I left gas in it. I'll use stabilizer this year and fog it.
Next is starting the X#)(*! snow blower....

I have a Stihl Farm Boss. Took apart the carb and cleaned a very clean looking carb. The spark is barely discernible. I will next try fresh fuel but think I may need a new ignition coil.
We always run the fuel out of the 2-stroke tools before storing them - but not the 2-stroke boat engine (need to keep the thread boat related :) ).

The 90 foot and 220 ton HMS bounty didn't make it.... Coast guard picked them up off NC this morning. 2 sailors still missing.

I am in about 5 blocks from the beach, its ugly. Rain started 9am Saturday and has been steady since. Winds steady 35-55. All along rudee and lynnhaven inlet in Virgina Beach are under water. Downtown Norfolk is a mess too. On the downtown camera you can see masts poking out where the fixed docks are under 5' of water.

The marina where I normally keep my boat is reported to have over 4' of water in the parking lot. All roads to it flooded and closed and the restaurants nearby have waist deep water in them.

I called the marina where currently docked. Yesterday they had a 8' rise but no issues yet, (bays are going up much higher than the tide level since it can't drain) the floating docks can go up about 10' there.

Bummer to hear about the Bounty - Where was her home port? At least the crew is safe (unlike the Pride of Baltimore years ago).

Locally, the Ocean City, MD fishing pier is already gone.
