BOAT, just for your knowlegde when your planning your helm seat mod, it is not thick f/g.the seat is two seperate pieces clam-shelled,hollow in the inside.I modded mine to lower the seat to the same height as the rest of the cockpit seating.

Re: Best!! thing to cut fiberglass
These are in general copies of the Fein Multitool - since the patent ran out a few years ago. The action is a very low amplitude/high frequency so that there is really no dust being blown around (at least with the Fein). This is really a golden bullet type tool - accurate cuts in tight places - the bi-metal blades even go thru nails. The only drawback of these tools is the extremely high cost of blades.kmclemore wrote:Cool. I've not used one of those yet, so glad to hear it worked out OK.
BTW, I'm assuming you were wearing a mask, and that you talcum-powered yourself prior to beginning.

I did think the top part of it where the arch is was a clam shell but I never imagined the whole thing was a clam shell!!??
So when I cut on any part of it I will be in a hollow??

Yup, and the Fein Multi-tool is still king of the hill in spite of all the knock-offs, and the high price, according to any review I've seen. Some of the knock-off tools (universal profiles) fit the Fein as well, so those are more economical to use in it. Have not seen a Fein on sale, but have been watching. I borrowed a knock-off and was impressed.

Is that tool thing on the internet? I would like to see it. I have a dremel tool, but my dremel tool does not have any saw like vibrating thing on it. I want to see the one you used that works so good. I need to cut some really THICK FB (the helm seat to be specific) and I want to make it a very clean and nice looking cut.

This one that Obelix shows the link for is about the same thing. Only the one I have is made by Ryobi.
When looking at the paperwork that came with it, I noticed mine says it is universal, in that it can use blades/etc. from several brands. (Just for info)

I have one of the knock off tools. I got it mostly because of price. ($18on sale @ princess auto. My favorite princess store.) Also the huge bonus of a multi tip that fits all blades. I have since spent more on one bade than what I paid for the tool. They work great!

Re: Best!! thing to cut fiberglass
I own a knock off too. The Dremel tool. $99 with assortment of sanding and cutting attachments and a blow mold box .. Not too heavy and not too light.. NOT for the guy using it everyday for a living and I dont intend too. Much better, might be Fien or Rigid or Rockwell for us DIY guys I " Think" even a cheap Harbor Freight would be fine.. I only buy basically toss away stuff from the Harbor.. Side Grinder? Ancient technology.. Once you break down and use the new tool? That Side grinder may sit in your box and only be used for very heavy situations.. BTW as others said ...Very Little Dust!
I bought mine really, just to save cutting time and effort and accuracy when cutting all the door jams as I install 1800 sq.ft. of 1/2" 18x18 Travertine.. every door jam will have to be cut 1" and it is fast and easy to cut everything from drywall to wood of all kinds and plastics and aluminum.

Re: Best!! thing to cut fiberglass
BOAT, not sure where your cuts will be at but the gap between the two halves varies from nothing at the edges where there bonded together to 3-4 inches in the middle of the seat.So i would imagine you will have to make double cuts in some areas for sure.

Re: Best!! thing to cut fiberglass
not really sure what your doing to your seat, but if your going to be reglassing any new shapes or additions just use the resin and a layer of matt. other wise any good epoxy will work fine.

Re: Best!! thing to cut fiberglass
Got my knock-off many years ago made by Bosch. Was a godsend when we were renovating our house up north. They are now even selling similar multitools at Aldi's here and whenever they are selling the attachments I stock up as they are a fraction of the cost. "Fein" in a way is a knock off as well, the oscillating saw goes back to orthopedic plaster cast saw invented in the early 1940sseahouse wrote:Yup, and the Fein Multi-tool is still king of the hill in spite of all the knock-offs, and the high price, according to any review I've seen.
