My boat is on the hard still, but I'm making progress, and one of the things I am getting close to doing is routing the swing-keel lift cable up into the cockpit. But I can't drop the keel fully to measure the full run of rope I need to drop the keel fully (and then pull it back up). Anyone have that measurement or have their boat in the water where you can measure it please? Thanks in advance!!

How long is your rope?
So how much rope does it take to lift the swing keel from fully down to fully up (retracted) on an S?

Re: How long is your rope?
In my notes for my boat is 12 ft 1/4 line and 5 foot of cable only I do have 2 to 1 on mine. The 5 foot of cable is enough to go from the center board to inside the cabin. Then it is 2 to one for the line. From what I remember 12ft was plenty prior to the modification. Altho it is easier to cut a line shorter than to stretch it.

Re: How long is your rope?
Sorry if I've confused, and thanks for the quick reply grady, but i'm trying to ask how much rope you pull when you pull up the keel? If you have a 2:1, which i'm thinking would be good to do, that should be twice the rope. So what i'm needing to know is how many feet does the rope move when you pull up the keel? Does that make more sense?
Re: How long is your rope?
Ok was at my boat this weekend I have about 5 to 6 ft of travel so without the 2 to 1 would guess around 3 ft.

Re: How long is your rope?
Just figure out how much down to the keel now for the way you want to run it and add about 3-4 feet and you will have it as the CB pivots so the length doesn't get much longer down or up. Our boat had and still has ...

Re: How long is your rope?
Thanks grady and Sum...
I wasn't planning on replacing the cable with rope, leaving the cable. I just need to know how much rope moves when you pull up the keel from all-the-way-down to all-the-way-up. I think grady got it, close to 3 feet, and with a 2:1 it will be 5-6 feet of rope pulled.
Thanks again!!

I don't see an easy way to have a 2:1 and keep it under the counter, vizwhiz wrote:Thanks grady and Sum...

Oh, I completely agree Sum! Am not planning to!Sumner wrote:I don't see an easy way to have a 2:1 and keep it under the counter,

Am going to route it up the back of the divider in the head like everyone else does, adding a 2:1 back there, then take it out the front of the cabin like you did ...doing the same thing all of you have done before. I'll just be doing it "blind", not having dropped the keel yet, and not being able to during the process...so I don't know from experience how much rope has to move to drop the keel all the way back down...that's why I'm asking...if the rope attached to the cable has to drop 3 feet, then I have to have that much movement of the center pulley in the 2:1 to let it all the way down. Hope that makes it more clear.

Yes it is possible! I will get some pictures.vizwhiz wrote:Oh, I completely agree Sum! Am not planning to!Sumner wrote:I don't see an easy way to have a 2:1 and keep it under the counter,

Re: How long is your rope?
Ok found one picture.

Had to move the lower block over slightly to just get enough travel. I ran cable out side and line inside. The 2 to 1 was done because I made a snug fit at the pivot point for the center board, enlarged bolt to 1/2 inch, added 15 lbs or so of lead to bottom of centerboard. This completely eliminated any banging at anchor.

Re: How long is your rope?
Wow...you did the 2:1 under the galley. I hadn't thought about doing it there. I was planning to do it in the head on the wood bulkhead after re-routing the rope to come straight up out of the galley top next to the head. I think it was Sumner and someone else who posted the mod I was going to copy. I'll have to look at it again, as it may simplify things to keep it under there.
So when you release (drop) the keel, about 3 feet of cable feeds out?

Yes there is just enough to get the centerboard all the way down.vizwhiz wrote:Wow...you did the 2:1 under the galley. I hadn't thought about doing it there. I'm not sure how long it is...but I can tell you I always seem to be at the end of it.
