I don't even use the winch for it, so a 2:1 advantage wouldn't be much use to me. And then there's all that line. :D

Yea. Something is wrong if you need more leverage. Slugs need lubricating, not pointing into the wind to loosen pressure.
Now I may install a looped haylard like Jim did on Koenig.

And, possibly, if you have the lines led aft, the turning blocks may need lubrication/replacement. Raising the main on a Mac should be very light work otherwise.

My 15 year old got our :macx: main up back winded in 12 knots of wind, no winch handle used.

Okay, so she lifts 80 pounds of concrete and is 6 feet tall, just sayin........

Spray the mast track with Teflon spray before raising it.

Sail-kote spray along the bolt rope if you don't use slugs, and should be quite easy. I like a spin lock mainsail feeder as well. You can put a simple shackle block at the base of the mast on the mast raising device bolt hole, another on a slide padeye on the forward location of the jib track and use that as a simple halyard aft mod to bring the halyard to the cockpit winches as well.

Matt, could you render a picture of your SpinLock installation? I'm guessing the only way to install it is to forego having the boltrope in the bottom section of the mast, below the feeder slot. If true, isn't there a downside to that?

I finally did that this year. Love it ... cuts down on spaghetti in the cockpit :)

Replace the dinghy size turning block at the mast head with a quality 2" swivel block and the main will fly up the mast. I also installed a chicken head to move my back stay and topping lift away from the sail roach.

Wow! You got a chicken head on your Mac?! That's soo cool - got a picture?

I always feel dumb in the harbor - all the other boats have the duck head on top of the mast except for me - even the boats that are smaller than me have one!

It has always seemed like it's something that is missing from the MAC rigging to me. I'm still not used to looking up and seeing a bare mast at the top - it's weird to me.

Where'd you get the chicken head?

Not to mention the seriously skinny mast the Macs have as opposed to all the competition.

I can pick our boat out a mile away...

BWY sells them--I think they were less than $20.00 BWY's is much smaller than the pic above but it makes adding a proper swivel block much easier--and now my X is starting to look like a "real" yacht :D

I asked the osprey that nests nearby if she would take a pic of my chicken head 38' above the lake, but she declined :(
