Centre Keel banging when lowered 1998 26X

Post by Linestarboard »

Does anyone know how to fix the sideways banging noise of the centre keel when you lower the centre keel whilst anchored/moored? If there's any kind of swell, it's heaps more comfortable leaving keel down, but the banging noise is intolerable. I even got up at 2am and slid a rope around keel and tensioned with Stbd winch to try to dampen the noise, which worked, but what a hassle. :macx:

Our 26X does the same...but another problem caused us to discontinue staying overnight with the centreboard down......tide and wind caused our anchor rope to snag the centreboard......not good...lots of work to unsnag

Nothing much you can do which is why we don't leave it down, sometimes will drop it about a foot but not much help and still rattles, if the rattle is caused by rolling with chop from the side I usually if annoyed enough will use a bridle to pull the nose into the chop or wind if both different and they sometimes are just pick a point.
Yep usually about 1 or 2 am is when it gets on your nerves enough or a tide changes.

Well with an M there is a fix. Drop a shackle down the slot. Jams the centre board real well. I wondered at the time of hoisting the main . . . I thought there a shackle to do this as I tied a bowline.

Anchoring never seems to be a problem with snagging the keel as we have 50m of chain as the first part of our rode (that much that we don't need to go to rope unless it's an emergency).

I did however fix the banging problem (Woo hoo). :D

I pulled off four Teflon olives off normal house plumbing compression fittings and a couple of 12C galvanised washers (all stuff you can just buy from Bunnings) and packed out the gaps.

My theory was the Teflon compression washers should wear well (considering they're designed for compression environment and will cope with the wear of raising and lowering keel) and the Gal washers shouldn't set up too much dissimilar metal corrosion with the steel keel pin.

Took about an hour to fix. Will post some photos. :macx:
