Spinnaker/Cruising Chute!

Post by Doug W »

Last week, I ordered a new Captured Star Cruising Chute from JudyB Sails! :D Can't wait! :D :P

My current spinnaker came off of a smaller sailboat but the price was unbeatable and it provided proof of concept and training for my wife and I. Can't wait to try out the larger, properly sized chute with 3 colors unique enough to set us out from the pack!!! 8)

Doug,
I just picked up a used (sailed twice)/new Kelly Hanson cruising spinnaker and chute scoop. Now I need to decide how to rig it. I know you can fly it from the foresail hound but others add an additional hound approx. 12in. above the foresail hound. Are you planning to add the upper hound?

Found this on Youtube, Spinnaker the movie http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PzKeugdbtac

Comments welcome:
Option 1 keep it simple port and starboard sheets to stern rail geneoa cleats, foresail hound....done go sailing

Option 2 (spaghetti boat)!
Add new hound above foresail hound?
New hound distance from foresail hound?
Use Genoa track and cleats for spin sheet?
Add additional block and cleats further aft?
Add spinnaker pole and mast track?
Unfortunately it looks like the real sail handling and performance comes with the use of a spin pole. Since I mostly river sail sea room is limited. However, depending on which pool I sail in I have my choice of either an E-W 8-10mi run or a N-S 10-15mi run. So the spin with added control could make those runs a lot of fun.

Can't wait to see your pics since you are 200mi south of me.

ME TOO!!!!!

I just got my Doyle Cruising spinnaker brand new! with the ATN dousing sock with custom chosen colors!. They had a 20 % off sale on all sails!

Can't wait to use it, have no clue! I like this vid..http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QFAzEc1UTaw

I purchased a new hound from BWY to instal 18 inches above the existing hound, as this is standard there and I am not looking to re-invent anything with my experience. I am making a pulpit out of a piece of stainless pipe from the local machine shop with a stand up air block on a genoa/jib track mounted up the length of the pulpit. I will just use the Genoa tracks astern with stand-up air blocks for now. BWY has a system of blocks that attach to the rear stanchions to get the lines farther astern for better performance. I just don't like the thought of blocks bouncing around on my gel-coat just so I can gain 18 inches astern for a tiny bit better performance.

Can't wait, as I have had all the parts/rigging for 6 months, but no sail!

I'll have to watch that spinnaker video!

I had gone ahead and added a BWY hound about 18" above the factory forestay hound with a block and halyard.

On the bottom, I just have a short line clipped to the spare hole in the tang that the furler is pinned to.

I have a thin sheet about 100' long that comes back to a block on the rear stanchion and back up to the wenches and cam cleats on each side. In fact, that's the only time I ever use the wenches anymore (since I got the EZ cleats on my genoa tracks. )

There is a part of me that REALLY wants to add a bowsprit but I don't want to risk not being able to clear the trailer's wench on some more steep ramps. I will compromise on that one.

I sail it like a light weight genoa. I have a difficult time wing on wing or wing/chute. I found that tying a preventer line on the mainsheet (tying the sheet to the aft cabin stanchion with a quick release knot) helps me substantially. I only have to keep the foresail filled.

This year, I picked up a fiberglass telescopic painter's pole from Menards for under $15. I plan on using that as a very inexpensive whisker pole. We'll see if that works. Some of my hair brained ideas don't always work as intended. :D

I also ordered a Doyle APC Spinnaker with ATN dousing sock from SailboatsOwner.com and I can't wait to see it.
( Dimension: I is 24.13', J is 9.71' for MacGregor 26M, LOA 26')
I need to install a Mast Hounds and I see some of you installed 18 inches above the existing forestay.
I assume that is the where the spinnaker flies most effective.
I am not sure if it is a valid concern but I saw in some posting not to place the mast hounds more than a few inches above because the top shrouds ends at he forestay mast hounds.
I have a 26M.

After Highlander let me borrow his OEM spinnaker I think I'm hooked. It's nice to be able to sail at a good clip in light wind. So i'm looking at purchasing a cruising spinnaker. Some have purchased the Doyle ATC spinnaker. My understanding is that it's a tri-radial cruising spinnaker. Just wondering what your thoughts are about this sail from those who use it. Original price is more expensive than OEM or Judy's spinnaker but they have a 20% off sale at the moment. Just looking for input, opinions etc.

Yeah Ross I know...when I borrowed John's spinnaker I thought I would be able to leave Lagoon City with it still in the boat but he remembered to ask for it back. I guess I should have given him a few shots of scotch before I left :D

If anyone has used the Doyle APC spinnaker I'd love to here what you think of them

While on this subject I thought I'd pose my own questions. My 26x came with an OEM spinnaker. I have never used it but I would like to try it out. I have no separate hound mounted on the mast like many of you seem to have and no dousing sock. With this in mind, can someone tell me how to rig it? I assume the original jib halyard runs to the head, with a sheet running to each of the spinnakers clews? The spinnaker flies in front of the roller furling. Is this it? Anything I need to be careful of in trying this for the first time? I don't mind buying what I need to run this efficiently once I know I'm going to use it, but for now id just like to try it and see if its something I'd like to pursue further. I don't even really know the condition of the sail at this point so I don't want to spend much.

We were bouncing off 5 kts or so in 8 kts of wind that day. At the end of this video I swing the camera around to the GPS, showing speed in kts.

Not bad for an inexpensive kite. Makes me wonder how Judy's would do on the same boat in the same conditions.

No no, Man, Tom, I really REALLY like the cut of that kite your flying in that picture - THAT'S the one I like -

I can tell it's really lite but the thing I REALLY like is the way the foot is shaping to the gunnels of T O M F O O L E R Y like as if it were custom made for the shape of the boat and I REALLY like the way the sail points at the mast hound on top because in stronger winds I like to spill the wind out of the TOP of my kite by paying out the halyard - I know that sounds unconventional but I do that because I do not like the boat to heel excessively on a run - it makes the hull drag. So instead of tying off the spin halyard I will wrap it around a jib winch and cleat it. Then if a gust pulls the boat over I will release the TOP of the kite to spill the wind - it's an old trick my dad told me to do when sailing lightweight boats like trailer boats.

That kite you have there is PERFECT for the way I like to fly one. I gotta get one - you think they are still available? The factory is gone!!   What do I do?
