Yeah, I was referring to temporal differences in the definition, which is why both words in the term “gay yacht” said 30 years ago, have a different meaning today, for example. And the geographical variances to the meaning as well.

Describing your own Mac as a “yacht” (freestanding word, again) carries with it the risk of giving some credence to the guys on those “other” forums that ridicule the Mac. I prefer to leave them alone in their woeful position. (That is, for anyone that pays attention to, and are concerned with such fellows... I'm not.)

Hey Matt  - we could start a list, called “Yacht; Not a Yacht”. I'll add...

If it has a pool, it's (at least, mega, super, or whatever) a yacht. If it fits in a pool, it's not a yacht.

If a helicopter can land on it, it's a yacht. If a helicopter can pick it up, it's not a yacht...

If it has a grand piano, it's a yacht. If a grand piano would sink it, it's not a yacht.

- B.

Let's face it Boys, Size Matters 8)

I simply tell people, when it comes up, that I/we have a "boat' or a "sailboat". When mixed among power boaters who're trying to figure who has the "shortest stick" and they ask it's size, my reply of 26 feet normally draws ahhs & the smell of their defeat... & sometimes also their feet :D

Simply, It's all the boat I can stand to afford. As Springsteen sang: " ...You ain't a beauty - but hey, You're all right..."

Always remember, there Is "Magic in the night" so, show a little faith...

We're definitely in the mix of entry level sailboats & Cruisers. B/c that's what All of us do with our boats :!:

& that cruising' - Day or other - Is more than most boats do: Sittin @ the dock of the bay...

a yacht is a: craft used for pleasure, no matter what size. Usually implied a high level of maintenance and outfitting.
This definition may also apply to: girlfriends & some wives... :?

-Maybe it's the alcohol.

-"Gaz Out".

If it has a boat, it's a yacht. If it's on a yacht, it's a boat.

When somebody ask how long and I say 26feet , they say that's awfully small .

I say its big enough for us .

Usually this is coming from people who either don't own a boat .
Or they own a boat , but it never goes anywhere .

Our little ship goes everywhere !

Yup, first real outing of the year with the new first mate on board. Temps in the 70’s, 20 kts out of the north which usually means it gets nastier the further south you head, but it just kept getting lighter and nicer all the way to the next town 15 nm south where we ran out of wind and into glass calm waters. Lots of people at the docks, absolutely no one on the water, just us; absolutely perfect first outing.

It don't get much cheaper than a few sheets of plywood.

It's 77f (25c for you metric types) and should be getting up to 90f (32c) today. It's a perfect day to read about sailing under florescent lights in a cubicle.

Interesting topic, worth revisiting 8)

Practical Sailor this month has an article about Entry Level Sailing Cruisers.. They go on about how they are "fine" for a couple maybe even 2 couples for short periods and close to shore.. and then they hit you with $60,000.00 to $80,000.00 price tag's Really? I already know most the arguments for and against MacGregors 26' M X S & D's .. I know Roger sold a LOT of them.. and I am a little surprised that the jump from Day Sailor to Short Term Close to Shore Cruisers is thought to be 30+' and OVER $60,000.00 .. and honestly leaning towards the $80K+ slot.. and Beyond...
Thank You Roger :) I could have NEVER sold my wife on $60 - $80 K..as an entry level sailboat for us..

Thanks for the heads up on this thread . Just read the all of it. I tell people I meet we have a cabin sailboat , they ask how big then I say 26 ft . And usually that answer gets a great response like wow or sound like fun. Non boaters and my surfing friends have told me throughout My sailing career that it just to much work . I think my definition of a real yacht is a boat that has to sit in a marina and cannot be trailered. To me that’s a lot of work constantly thinks about wind conditions daily and weather of not my yacht at the dock need some attention.
