My first sail boat! '87 26D

My wife and I have been talking about getting a boat and finally found one we like:

Besides basically being a floating fire hazard with its wiring - it looked pretty good. I took care of some of the basic wiring and got all the interior lights working. I had to fish new wire up the mast for the steaming light to finally get that light working. I've replaced all the sheets, cleared a massively blocked cockpit drain plug.. I made one of the 11" Clamp rig tensioning tools to try and get the rig to a half-way okay state.. Thanks to a post on these forums. The Lewmar #6 winches were taken apart and well lubed. I don't think they have ever been taken apart. They were filthy and dry inside.
Thankfully my wife and I did get to sail it a couple times before I decided to start tearing it apart.
I even convinced her to help clean a little!


I've spent the better part of today dropping the mast and repairing the daggerboard. It came with a little rub and marks on the bottom.

Its a project on the go. I still have a list of things to do including mounting some Spinlock XTS clutches for the halyards.

Fair enough. She usually has zero interest in actually sailing - she prefers to simply be referred to as 'Deck Fluff'. It certainly is in Central Ontario. What gave it away? The extreme lack of foliage on the trees?

The cut out seat that was replaced with a drop in cooler kind of bothered me at first. But it seems okay now. I also made an insert to fit that space to return it to a bench seat. Painted it up white and it is a great fit. I don't know what all is different in the interior.




One thing that I was wondering if anyone could help me out with - the daggerboard should sit at how many inches below deck? I've finished fibreglassing and painting the daggerboard. I'm buying replacement ropes for it today because I don't trust the badly sun faded and mildewed ropes that were currently there. All I can find in the manual is "Not below the water in the trunk".... How eloquent. I'd prefer to see a hard number. I think I found 57" below deck line for the Macgregor 26M, but I'd like to know what the numbers are for the 26D due it the lower deck height. I just measured from my deck top to the water level in the daggerboard trunk and measured exactly 4'. I guesstimated around 53-55" to be the position for the stopped knot in the rope and that should allow the board 4' down into the trunk. Do these numbers seem right?

I've had "Three Sheets" for 7 or 8 years and I think the 26D is the perfect trailer sailboat. It's not my first one either.

Thanks Steve. I have been sailing my father in laws Tanzer 26 for years and weekly club racing / one design racing a Kirby 25 for 5 years now. Sadly, I am limited in draft where I am keeping the boat and needed something that would be fine in 3' of water. I also didn't want it to have a PHRF rating of over 200. The M26D fit the bill and has similar performance to the Tanzer 26.
I prefer the head room of the T26 but accept that the water ballast of the M26 takes up a lot of room.

Can anyone measure their deck top to daggerboard height with their daggerboard fully extended?

I just realized that the license number means Lindsay Ontario.. I'm guessing that is where the previous owner licensed it? I just printed off the paperwork to send in along with bill of sale etc. How long does the process take? If the OPP pulls me over right now, what do I show him? Bill of sale?
