Jib / Genoa rigging

Post by usererror »

After seeing many other boats out on the lake, some have their jibs & genoas rigged differently at the forward foot. Some have it attached right at the top of the deck, others theirs go up above the bow railing.

My Venture has the bow railing and am thinking of raising the rigging so the sale doesn't get stuck on the railing, especially when using the Genoa sail. I used it once and felt like I wasn't doing it right so I haven't used it since. :?

It's not a big deal, I was worried about it my first season with my Mac but it's not a concern anymore. I was watching a local race with big expensive boats and noticed even they had contact between their headsail and the pulpit when beating. The higher your sail is off the deck the more it will contribute to heeling the boat.

Cruisers sometimes have the foot of the sail higher off the deck for forward visibility it's a trade off. Adding a Johnson lever will raise the foot of the sail about 8 inches so it's easier to pun the forestay at the correct tension... this will be a small visibility gain but won't get the sail completely off the pulpit.

Go sailing with an experienced sailor (another Mac sailor would be best) and talk about every little thing and you'll gain confidence quite quickly. Here in Vancouver the Mac club has multiple training sail days a year... And fun races

Put your location by your avatar, there is probably someone close by who'll lend a hand.

Sorry I see you've already given your location... Should be a few sailors nearby to lend a hand with Genoa trimming.
