Mac 22 Rudder

Post by houxtwin »

Hello, I am buying a Macgregor 22 and have a question about the rudder. It looks as if it has been sanded to the wood around the edge of the rudder. My question is, what it the white on the rudder? Is it paint, gel coat or something else?

Pictures would really help. Also, since this is a brand new boat, suggest you talk to your dealer. The :macm: rudder is two fiberglass halves bonded together to make a hollow assembly except in the upper pivot area where it has a wood core. All finished with gel coat.

Yes it is a used boat. I'm not sure if its is a venture or not. I just know it is 22 feet and a Macgregor. How do I tell if it is a venture?. Has the pop up top on the cabin. Needs some work but is mostly in good shape and is dry inside. No smell or anything like that. I will try and post some pictures of the rudder later. It really looks like it just needs the gelcoat replaced. Looks like the previous owner my have started the project and then not finished it. The rudder is sanded smooth around the edges and there does not seem to be any water damage to the exposed wood. This is a boat that the owner died recently and the wife just wants to get ride of her.

Thanks for your input. I am trying to contact owner about finalizing the purchase this weekend. I will try and post some pics of the rudder to give a more clear idea of what I am dealing with.

OK, based on this info, I recommend you plan on sanding the area to a smooth shape, apply a few layers of biaxial fiberglass cloth (oriented at 45 degrees to make draping over the tight curve easy), apply enough resin to make smooth, and finish with gelcoat for looks.

My venture 222 rudder was paint over wood. I made a new one out of wood, glassed over it, then painted over it. The paint has rubbed off in a few spots but I don't worry about it with the glass under it.

My Venture 22 rudder gets abrasion constantly. I sand the wood lightly and coat it with JB Qwik. I use it for all repairs, works great. Then I paint with Rustoleum oil based paint that I also use on the deck. This repair is easy fast and cheap and lasts until I run aground again.

I also have a venture 22 that had a soggy coming apart at the seems rudder that previous owner "fixed" with drywall screws. first thing I did was to build a kick up rudder out of stainless and mahogany fashioned after rudder crafts design. It works great. then I went back ground out all bad spots of original rudder put some stainless all thread threw it to hold it together then re-glassed the hull out of it.then i put a faux burrow root finish on it and it looks like the real deal. have not used it yet as its to pretty.

i cant figure out how to add pictures here when i do i will
