I am not sure what your set up is on your lower unit, but I will decribe mine. It has 4 main bolts, two on each side. There is a smaller bolt under the anode trim tab fin that must be removed. I have two shafts, a large shaft that has a spline and has a rotary motion and is the shaft that has the water pump impeller. The shaft slides out of the upper unit without difficulty. The second rod is forward of the large shaft. It has only an up down motion and is the gear shifting rod. It puts the lower unit in forward, neutral and reverse. You can actually see it without removing anything on mine. It has a long connecting (shift coupling) nut with a lock nut above and below it. Make sure that you mark this shaft and nut to keep you distances the same so that you will not have gear grind when you reinstall. Loosen the top jam nut and screw the long connecting nut up the shaft until free of the lower unit shaft.
I think the 10mm bolt is the one that is under the anode trim tab on mine. It will hold things solid. The shifter will allow wriggle.
I hope this is not too confusing since I am going from last years memory.

The sequence if I remember correctly:
1. shift in neutral
2. remove prop
3. loosen jam nuts above the shift coupler (long nut). Screw shift rod coupler until upper and lower rods are separated.
4. remove trim tab after marking position.
5. remove bolt under trim tab
6. remove 4 bolts, two on either side of lower unit
7. pull lower unit straight down.
From personal experience, when putting unit back on, don't rotate the prop backwards. One of the rubber vanes on my water pump changed directions causing inadequate low speed output.
Hope this helps.

Casey, I have discovered the fifth bolt under the trim tap. I think this will loosen things up.
I don't understand how to loosen the jam nuts above the shift controller or how to screw the shift rod coupler until the upper rods and lower rods are separate.
I'm not familiar with the nomenclature and am unable to spot these things.
By nuts, are you describing the end of bolts?
I can see the 'shifter' that moves from forward to reverse from neutral. There are some bolts close-by. I'm sure there's a shaft somewhere down there.
The Yamaha, which supplies the upper end for Mercs, should be similar.
I try to be smart and adaptive, but have zero experience under the cowl.
Stay with me.

In view, on the shifting rod, on the lower unit should be three nuts. A regular nut, a very long nut, and another regular nut (coupler). They will be tight against each other. There should be threads on the shifting rod above and below these nuts. Place an end wrench on the long nut (coupler) and another on the top nut and loosen the top nut. Then loosen the bottom nut and screw the long nut up the top shaft until it comes off the lower shaft.
I will attempt to attach a picture.

Casey,
Reason that didn't work is that your hard drive (fortunately for you) is not published on the World Wide Web
You'll need to upload that picture to a webpage (photobucket.com seems good) and then insert their page link within your Image statement.
Was that just about as clear as mud??? Good! That means my Bulwagga will hold!

Without a website, the easiest way to post a gif or jpg is to:
1. Go to Photobucket and start your own account.
2. Follow the Photobucket instructions to upload a picture from your harddrive.
3. In Photobucket highlight the image name.

4. Copy it to this website. Choose the quote button to see how I post it.
You can only do this with jpg and gif extensions.
I'm rootin' for ya Sloop!

I decided on what most of you suggested. That is, to order the complete lower assembly from Central Florida Yamaha. USAA will cover everything except the deductible ($280). The shade tree mechanic will check it out and install it.
The claims adjuster, a guy named Charles, works out of Tampa. He said Yamaha was pretty reasonable with their parts. Honda is the worst. I guess its like their cars. You dont have to take them in often, but hold on to the top of your head when you do.
I asked him if he got involved with the hurricane marina catastrophes at NAS Pensacola. He said he spent five weeks over there. All the boats were destroyed.
The hurricane states governors got together in Tampa. A meteorologist/astrologer named Grey predicted this hurricane season to match last years. Nationwide and USAA have gone to the commissioner requesting a 22% hike in homeowner premiums. The company you insure with is standing in that line.
Florida has a special hurricane deductible. Its 2.5% of the value of your home. Each year, my policy shows an increase in the insured coverage for the house. Thats nice. The deductible also climbs. Ouch.

I sent to your private address. Will resend tonite. I took mine out after draining my carbureators. Everything was going great until I started having double the amount of engine noise. I made it back to my slip and found a ragged hole in my lower unit on the starbord side. I am theorizing that when I was backing out of my canal, I hit something with a weight on the end with the prop. The weight swung up and knocked a hole in the upper aft portion of the lower unit. Fortunately, it did not involve the gears or part that was sealed.
