Ontario Sailors Rendezvous 2015

I scrolled through some of the posts on the rendezvous, and it looks like a fun time. We're getting closer to the start date (August 22) on our Great Loop cruise. We'll be starting on Lake Michigan and heading south, counterclockwise on the loop. Looking ahead, if all goes well, our itinerary would put us starting on the Trent-Severn around mid July, 2016. We might be just a bit late to drop in, but one never knows. When that time rolls around, I'll keep my eye on posts regarding next year's event.

That would be cool if you ended up passing through Lake Simcoe on your loop right at the time when we are meeting up at Lagoon City. The Trent Severn Waterway Loop passes right in front of Lagoon City on your way up to the Narrows, Lake Couch, and Lock 42.

It's over a year off, but we surely hope that our arrival in your neighborhood will coincide with your rendezvous. We've been attending the BWY rendezvous nearly every year since 2002, and they are always a lot of fun. It's great to meet up with fellow Mac owners, exchange stories, and see what everyone has done with their boats. We're hoping to meet up with many members of this board on our loop trip. Be sure and post the dates for your 2016 Rendezvous as soon as possible, and I'll pencil the dates in on our itinerary. You never know, we just might drop on by. There's a lot of water out there, but I've learned that it can often be a small world.

Tow Vehicle Insurance: Canada requires a Canadian Insurance Card, which is free from your insurance broker or agent with a phone call. US insurance coverage is valid in Canada, but you're supposed to have the Canadian proof of insurance card, presumably to ensure the minimum coverage required, which may or may not be consistent with US requirements. Mine was good for a year the last time I got one, cost nothing, and made me feel better about coverage in another country.

VHF Radio: As far as I've been able to ascertain, and it has been discussed here once in a while, you're supposes to have a Marine VHF station license for the radio, and a wireless telephone operator's license for you. I have the latter (cheap, and good for life), but not the former, which is expensive. So I have the radio on whenever I'm on the water, tuned to 16, but I don't transmit. If I had to, I would, without hesitation (the last thing I'd be thinking about in a mayday situation is the paperwork), but so far I haven't had the need. Actually, that's not quite true, as I've used the VHF when sailing across Lake Ontario and calling ahead for dock space, but I didn't know I wasn't supposed to be using it without paperwork.

That's how I got mine. There has been discussion here on the subject, but I just don't remember what the final determination was. It had to do with folks from other countries using marine radios, and it went both ways - Canadians in US waters, and vice-versa. I don't need any radio license in the US, AFAIK.

Hey Tom Technically you're supposed to have vhf license if broadcasting. I never got around to get mine, however I have often radio ahead to marinas for slip availability, I think it's channel 68 for that. I remember at previous MMOR we would agree on a channel to broadcast between the group. However these days we tend to text on cell.

Looks like you're right, Rocky. Canadians, operating in Canadian waters only, are not required to have a station license, but are required to have an operator's license.

And here's a summary of US regulations for boats operating in Canadian waters. Basically, the author says the US requires a station license and operator's license, but Canadian authorities aren't about to enforce US regulations, especially when Canadian boats aren't required to have such documents to start with. But there is a disconnect in that Transport Canada says Canadians do need an operator's license, and whomever wrote that summary/opinion says you don't.

BWY sells the vang as a kit. But for only a few bucks more than the two standard fiddles blocks, which have plain bearings, you can get the air blocks, which have ball bearing sheaves. Use that for your main sheet, and retask the main sheet as the vang.

You don't need low friction blocks for the vang, and the air blocks will be much better in your hand as the main sheet system, especially in gusty weather when you want to play the main sheet against the gusts to keep the boat at the heel you want (sailing on an even keel ), without cleating off. The other two bits are just bails; the boom bail is the same as that for the main sheet upper fiddle block, and the lower one, on the mast, is a bit bigger. You can get them from BWY also, or any marine store.
