Anyone in the Daytona Beach to Jacksonville area..

Post by Sumner »

With some luck I might be back in Florida this coming weekend if I can sneak in between weather events. I'm going to continue with the trip and start up the ICW. No plans at this point where this will take me but my sister and family live just off Long Island Sound. Not sure if that will be reasonable or not but I'm headed north.

I have a doctor appointment June 15th back over in Port Charlotte to make sure my new pacemaker is ticking along like it should be. I need to go over there also to close up the Endeavour in the yard and visit.

So the plan is to head north up the ICW and hopefully get somewhere between Daytona Beach and Jacksonville by the 10th if things go well. Then I'd like to find a place to leave the Macgregor and rent a car to go over to Port Charlotte for 4-5 days.

Anyone have dock space up in that area or know of one or an inexpensive, if there is such a thing, marina where I could leave the Mac?

Also I'm entering back in the states at St. Lucie Inlet and need to get some supplies and cash at a Wells Fargo. Any place there are north of there were it is easy to anchor and dinghy ashore to take care of those things. I could go a day or two north of there but need to get ashore at some point sooner vs. later.

Any Ideas??

Thanks,

Sumner

Sumner,

I can give you all the local support you need coming into the Stuart to Ft Pierce area...be glad to help and I am in the middle of the two inlets (St Lucie and Ft Pierce inlets), so I could meet you anywhere. I'll PM you my cell number.

Fair winds!

David

PS...the Jensen Beach causeway anchorage is close to shore, has lee protection from all wind directions, and is walking distance to a WF and Publix (.25/.5 miles respectively)...it's about 45 minutes north of the St Lucie inlet entrance up the ICW

Thanks, I won't be that far north when I have to run to the west coast but might get that far north later and maybe we could meet up then.

Thanks got your PM and read it before this. I see a NE Causeway Blvd.. Is that the one and where in relation to the causeway? West side? North or south of it and where do I go ashore?

Getting ashore seems to be one of the harder things to do on these trips the first time you are to a new place. I'll check Active Captain and I have a Florida Cruising guide for the east coast I think but it is at the boatyard  .

Thanks and I PM'd you back with my phone numbers,

Sumner

Summer,

I own a house I Atlantic Beach, Fl. which is located at the junction of the St. John's and the ICW. I'm currently living in PA but coincidentally will be in town between the 31st and the 9th. PM me and we will see if I can lend any support. Heck, even if I can't help I'd like to buy you a beer just so I can meet the legend and pick your brain.
I also have a mooring you can use but it is further up the St John's than you might have time for.

Sumner,

I asked a friend of mine to do a quick inspection of my mooring and he reported that my mooring ball has been cut and the chain to the mooring itself is resting on the bottom of the river. Unfortunately it is unusable at this time. Apparently FWC has been cracking down on derelict boats in the area and because it had been empty for so long they deemed my mooring abandoned.

The anchorage itself and the adjacent public boat ramp are still in a great location. I'm sure your ground tackle will hold perfectly in the deep muddy bottom so, it might still be an option for you.

The area is located at 30° 7.916' N, 81° 38.068'W (roughly) which is approximately 33 statute miles from the intersection of the ICW and the St. Johns River. The anchorage is quiet, patrolled by FWC regularly and located 500 yards from a public boat ramp, full service marina and a short walk to shopping, banking, etc. ..

My house is located less than a mile from the ICW. Again there are several public boat ramps, marinas and all shops, banks, etc in that area as well.

Most of the marinas in the area are full service with reasonably priced transient. Unless it is a holiday availability is usually not an issue.

Jacksonvilles downtown has a  public marina located approx 18 miles up the St Johns. The marina is free for up to 3 days  unless there is a special event such as an NFL game or fireworks.  The water and electric are extra but very reasonable. The police and fire marine units share this space so security is not an issue.

There is also 1100' of free dockside space along the downtown shopping district.  They call this area the Jacksonville Landing. This security at night can be sketchy and the proximity to the bar scene can be a nuisance. It it's great for a day trip but other than that I'd recommend the marina. They are 0.5 miles walk away from each other.

I'm sorry if this is a lot of info but Jacksonville really has a lot to choose from for transient sailors. Keep me posted on your progress and I will do what I can to help guide you in. I'll also send you a PM with my contact info.

Take care and be safe,
John

Thanks for the info and I got the email. I've been told there is a good mooring field at St. Augustine and that might be about as far north as I could get with my timetable and maybe not even that far north. I"ll check out options more when I get into FL and start north and I'll stay in touch,

Sumner,

I have two properties on canals in St Augustine, both have docks to tie into and the canals have just been dredged. I'm in California but will be in Jacksonville mid June. You are welcome to tie to either property - one is vacant (just completed construction) and one is rented but should be vacated by end of May. I would attach a Google map of the area, but I can't figure out how to do it on this board. The best is to just Google "treasure beach st augustine fl". If you are interested, please email me since I don't often check this board (other than to read on your mods and travels). jbachatsunpremedotcom. If you are still in the area when I get there I would love to meet with you.

That would be great if I can get that far north in time. I'm going to call the doctor's office once I'm in the states and see if I can possible reschedule a couple days later than the 15th.

I found a Treasure Beach Rd. off A1A just north of Crescent Beach and south of Frank Butler County Park West with the canal off on the south side of the street. Is that the one?

I also just sent an email so let me know if you didn't get it and thanks,

Sumner
