Second Motor(Kicker) on 26M
Second Motor(Kicker) on 26M
Has anyone installed a second motor, (kicker), on a 26M as backup for main motor? If so how did you mount - install it? What type and brand of motor mount did you use? What size motor. Pictures would help. Do not want to install Oar Locks as I don't know where I would store the oars.
I am asking because I was on the Columbia River Sat. when my motor quit. Had to flag down a tow. Don't want to go through that again. Was just up river from a bridge.

My Suzuki 2.2 will actually push our boat. Of course wind and current might put a damper on that. If it were me, I'd use a motor that could also work for a dinghy. Some have put 9.9 on kicker plates. Too heavy to transfer to a dinghy (if the dinghy could handle it)

I figure if I lose the motor I've got the sails to get me close enough to a harbor to call for a tow into dock, unless there's no wind, in that case I should have plenty of time to get in the dingy with a tow line and very slowly make my way to harbor or keep it off the rocks if there's current.

Your 100yds from a RR bridge that is only 28ft high when it is closed. Thanks for the info. I was thinking about using a long shaft about 3hp so that I could also use it on a dingy. What brand and model motor mount did you use?

I put/bolted a 2x4 section on my (PO) SS aft rear ladder for a mount. Several Mac owners (youtube) use them for getting in/out of their marina.

That link was not from my boat. I don't have a mount. However, I have pushed/pulled the boat from the dinghy with the 2.2. It moved us (and dinghy) pretty good. So, I figured in a pinch I could use the dinghy/motor to move the boat. Maybe strap the dinghy to the side and "tow" the Mac with it. A proper motor mount would be ideal, however, you bring up a good point. Would it interfere with steering?NiceAft wrote:Russ,

I hang the motor off the stern seat pulpit with a wood homemade bracket.

However, as mentioned above, our Suzuki 2.2 will push the boat fairly well. Not sure in a heavy wind or chop though. My son would ride in the dinghy and "push" the Mac.

Thats the one thing I can't rely on here. you can be 100 ft from shore in 500 ft of water. I'd hope to be in the middle of the chuck and drop the drogue if anything.

Throwing out an anchor and intentional groundings are two highly effective ways of preserving your boat and those on board. By standing on deck and trying to wave down a passer-by for a tow you effectivley did not remedy your situation without outside assistance (self rescue), and you potentially put all those on board and the vessel in danger. You drew a lucky card and managed to get assistance in this case; However that will not always be the case. If you were in fact a hundred yards from the bridge and you didn't have tackle in the water or any other sort of back up plan as it would appear, you'd probably be a viral video on youtube of that 'guy waving from deck as his boat crumples under a bridge' and you really don't want to be 'that guy'. A hundred yards adrift in current trying to set an anchor is pretty tight. I've gone over these scenarios a hundred times in my mind on what I will do and in no way can/should anyone expect that someone will simply come rescue them. It may be hours, might be days before help can get to you. Self rescue should be your first and foremost priority in any event.
Be happy your thread is alive and growing, although it may stray a little the content is all relevant. If you really want the answer to your question look in the mods section or do a search of the forum.

For me I want the ability to power longer distances on less fuel .one of the draw backs for me is the smaller fuel tanks with the 90 horse motor .the 9.9 Yamaha high thrust and tohatsu sail pro get over 20 mpg burning a 1/4 a gallon a hour .at that rate with 24 gallons at 5.5 mph you would have a Awsome range .i did not buy our mac to use locally it is for the keys ,outer banks ,Bahamas and dry tortugas .i think it would suck to trailer a thousand miles and have a trip messed up by a motor issue .
