I recently downloaded SEAiq. It uses free noaa maps and you can overlay active captain on top of the noaa maps. Have yet to get to saltwater to use it but we are going to crystal river Fla. to go scalloping on 28 -30th of July. Never have been to that area so will be using this app to go out into the gulf and hopefully find my way back. Can give a better review after that weekend if you are interested. We have ipad air 2. It is also downloadable on your iphone which we have done also. We will not be able to use the as my motor has yet to arrive at the dealer.
I have used navionics in my phone. Worked really well When there is phone signal. Very accurate. Not cheep. I think it was about $50. But that includes marine charts of north america.
As helpful and valuable as electronic navigation is remember that electronics can and do fail. Don't get so reliant on it that you neglect traditional navigation.

We typically have four or five GPS sources on board these days, given that all of our phones and tablets have it. Not saying failure isn't a concern, but redundancy is pretty high these days.

To answer your question, I ONLY use a tablet (Samsung Galaxy TAB 3 7") to navigate with Navionics Boating as my main app. Should the tablet fail, I can use my phone as a backup. Coupled to a Vexilar TPod-SP200 I have a complete chartplotting and depth sounding solution for about a quarter of the price of a regular 7" chart plotter. One drawback: daylight visibility is less compared to a traditional chart plotter.
I use mainly the Navionics Boating App. It works very well off-line, if you have an internal or an external GPS input.
The feature-set and frequent map updates make this IMHO the best all-around app for navigation. I've tried several apps, but this is the most complete one. I run it on my Ipad3, with external Dual GPS receiver, and on our Android phones as well as on my wife's android tablet. The "Sonarchart" option is providing outstanding depth-profiles with frequent updates.
My iPad does not like talking to non Apple things. It will not blue tooth with my Samsung phone so I can check the weather on the app on the iPad. It will not talk to my Samsung ear phones. But it works really well with any apple product. So when you go get some GPS device to work with your iPad make sure it will talk to it before you hand over the cash even if the sales person says it will.

Thats the thing, I bought this Garming GPS 10 in 2007
and that ipad2 is old too
i'm tempted buy a ipad air 2 but i'm holding back that decision...lets wait until i figure out something with what i have on hand
