first time boat owner
good day all. I stumbled across this site while looking up info on my new boat. I just purchased a 1969 MacGregor Venture 24. She needs to be shown some love but I hope to get it in the water soon. When I was younger my parents had a sweet 16 and a GulfCoast 18 that we would take to the lake a lot. This is quite a lot bigger than either of those and I have not been sailing in 25 years or so. I hope it comes back to me. I have had the kids helping me power wash the whole boat and I have worked on sanding some of it down. We are going to repaint it inside and out. Any suggestions on painting it right? I have been watching videos on painting boats with Durabak. anybody have any experience using it on a boat or know of something better to use? any suggestions you have would be a huge help.

I have no experience with Durabak but I've had very good results with Interlux Briteside paint. Just follow the directions on their videos and it should come out nicely. If you store your boat on the trailer you can use the topside paint on the whole thing. If you store it in the water you'll need to use a bottom paint.
When we bought our first sailboat in 2007 it had been almost 30 years since I had sailed and it came back to me. I'm sure it will for you as well.

Thanks guys. The wife loves the name because the boat is a '69 so it fits the era. Looks like i do not get to plea with Poseidon to change her name. Lol. I will look into that paint. I will be storing it on the trailer. That is something else i will need to figure out. I need to paint the trailer and do some work on it. I will have to find a way to jack the boat up and pull the trailer out. I dont want to spend a bunch on boat jacks if i dont have to becaus3 this may be the only time i use them. Still googeling that problem.

I have the same boat, but mine is a '73!!! I used paint from Jamestown Distributors...worked great and easy to use! Good luck!

You can rest these boats on 4x4 timbers and solid blocks or jack standsElkySS wrote:Thanks guys. The wife loves the name because the boat is a '69 so it fits the era. No cement blocks please. No no no. Not safe. Cringe whenever I see it.

Do you happen to have a pic of what you mean? I would hate to do it wrong and send a 4x4 thru the bottom.

Re: first time boat owner
The picture you posted may work but it would make me a bit nervous hoping the upright 4x4s would stay in position. I welded up some C-channel to fit my hull and padded it with 2x4s. Sumner made some nice wooden supports for his. http://purplesagetradingpost.com/sumner ... de-39.html Whatever you find that works for you just make sure it's well supported.
I was able to raise my boats by lowering the trailer jack all the way down and supporting the stern. Then I raised the trailer jack all the way up and supported the bow. Then I added 2x6s between the trailer bunks and the hull and repeated raising and lowering the trailer jack and supporting the hull until the boat was as high as I needed it. I raised my V-222 just high enough to prep and paint the bottom. I raised my 26d high enough to completely remove the trailer. It took a lot of time and sweat, especially doing it all by myself, but I was able to get it done.

That's my only concern about retiring in Idaho. I do hate the thought of leaving the year round sailing of Southern California.Tomfoolery wrote:Thanks for the reminder. Autumn is getting dangerously close already.TaZ-n-Izzy wrote:no winter prep for us

Re: first time boat owner
Here is a video I watched to give me some ideas removing my 26S to fix the centreboard. I did not use stands but just big wooden blocks built up on both sides and in the middle. 2x6 across screwed to the blocks and than more 2x6 on top hinged in the middle with wood blocks holding 2x6 to the angle of the hull I used the trailer jack to lower the tongue put the first supports just aft of the rear trailer bunk. I than lifted the tongue of the trailer and using my high lift jack lifted just aft of the forward bunk. Moved the trailer forward until the axel touched the jack. And repeated until trailer was clear and I than braced at the forward bunk similarly to the aft support. I would have also put a third support in the centre of the boat just as safety but I was working on the centreboard and minimized getting in and out of boat.

I can't miss what I've never experienced, but I'm definitely getting tired of cold and snow. Oddly enough, the older I get, the further north I keep moving.dlandersson wrote:Yup, I'd miss it too.![]()
