GPS and Depth Finder recommendations

I think a touch screen would be nice - after so many years using iphones our intuition is to reach out and touch the screen, but it does not work on most of these Garmin units unless you get the big 7 series. I think a touch screen would be nice.

Yes I would recomend going that route to anyone who is doing a new install now. Well worth the extra. I put one of the new 7607 in this spring and it is easy to use and works well.

I think the engineers at Garmin realized that it may need to be used wet. Buttons are big have had no issues when wet.

I think both people are right - we need BOTH! Mouse AND touchscreen.

Don't get me wrong, I think the buttons are great. It's not that. it's just that the GPSMAP5 uses the same software, same screens, same graphics, same EVERYTHING of the big 7 series touchscreen unit. When your using the GPSMAP5 the graphics are just yelling at you to "touch me" - there are graphic buttons and drop down boxes and the whole bit just like a touchscreen unit - but you must use the mouse on the front of the case to get to all that stuff - you need to mouse over to everything just like on a desktop computer. It's like using a mouse on your IPAD. Even the instructions that came with the GPDMAP5 are the same ones they use for the 7 series touchscreen unit. They are the same unit, only one has a huge touch screen and the other does not:




That's my only beef - I would rather have BOTH - the buttons AND the touchscreen. The mouse works really good, and sometimes I would prefer the mouse - (like when the water is rough - it's easier to operate the mouse when things are bouncing), but I would also like to select things by just pointing to them with my finger - (that would also help keep my finger out of my nose). (That's a joke )

Then you want the new B&G Zeus2. Raced this weekend with a friend that just installed one. Liked it, features are almost identical to my Garmin. The unit is larger with the same size screen. Would not fit where I wanted mine.

I recently installed a Garmin EchoMap 44DV - it's a 4" plotter and sonar with tranducer. I paid under $300 including a full set of coastal charts. Garmin sells a version with inland charts instead. It has tide and currents built into it. It was more than adequate for what I needed. It has NMEA 0183, not 2000. For the price, it's a bargain!!

I used it for navigation during a 10 day cruise in the San Juans Islands, along with a paper chart. It made the trip easy, navigation wise. For the details, I loved the Garmin chart plotter, especially showing the real-time current right on the screen. I must admit, however, I always had a paper chart handy, for getting the "big picture" at a glance.
