Cleaning fresh water bladder
Cleaning fresh water bladder
Looked for post but could not locate any. We recently purchased a 88, 26 D and the water bag has not had a faucet connected to it for some time. The lines under the sink are intact but not looking sanitary. A fold down faucet was given to us from the previous owner, but there is no pump. Not a big deal to install one, but will use a hand pump style to limit the grand kids ability to drain the tank or leave the pump on. Be there with a motor home or two.
Replacing the hose dose not look practical based on the connection to the bag. Is there a product we can use to rinse the bladder and lines to at least allow us to use the water for basic cleaning? We plan or bringing drinking water in a separate jug anyway. Thanks

Try looking for a lot for cleaning hydration bags/packs. Platypus, Msr make the bags just can't remember a brand off the top of my head. Check REI or MEC for Canadians. Should come with a few brushes and a long flexible rod

Welcome to mod heaven if this is your first one. Otherwise you know what you're gonna eventually have to do. One of my first mods was redoing my water system from the PO's job. Which was good but dirty. & necessary even though I don't drink it's water
A clear sealable Gal of... Poland Spring is a dollar a gallon on sale. I just redid my water system a second time
But I drink from The Spring.

Re: Cleaning fresh water bladder
We replaced the factory set up in the galley to a flexible 13 gallon tank, with a dual filter cleaning system, and electric tap.
The x head sink is on separate 5 gallon hand pump system which we replaced tank, hoses, and tap.
Every fall we rinse both tanks with bleach, and in the spring we use an RV fresh water cleaner called Stay Fresh. Also have a small bottle of taste remover that we add every time we fill with water.
The water taste with the dual cleaner is fine for me but my wife still like bottled water.

I did see Stay Fresh at the RV store (Campland) and wondered if that might be it. Like Gazmn stated it will be bottled water for drinking, but do want to be able to use the water system. The bag does not seem overly nasty, but we will see once I get things connect and circulating water.Wind Chime wrote:We replaced the factory set up in the galley to a flexible 13 gallon tank, with a dual filter cleaning system, and electric tap.

Wind chime, where did you find a flexible bag? Thanks

Re: Cleaning fresh water bladder
We have a 50 Litre bladder and mould starts growing if water is left in it for any length of time (well maybe it doesn't if you add a 'product' but we dont add anything). I just keep an eye on the bladder and usually about once or twice a year, I take it out and clean it.
To do this I empty it, then swish a few litres of water around and empty again, then add a few good splashes of white vinegar and a few litres of water and swish it around. Then I get a piece of wooden dowel (about 2 feet of a broomstick) and I wrap one of these

around the end and tie it on with string and scrub out the inside getting rid of all the mould.
Then I rinse it several times.
As to hoses etc, I pretend they are clean and I dont need to worry
We just dont drink the stuff from the bladder (even though we probably could). Its hand washing and dish washing water to us.

Our flexible water tank is a Plastimo that we got from West marine. Many different shapes and sizes.bobflshmn wrote:Wind Chime wrote:

That opens up some options! I expected them to cost more. ThanksWind Chime wrote:Our flexible water tank is a Plastimo that we got from West marine. Many different shapes and sizes.bobflshmn wrote:Wind Chime wrote:

Thanks great description, we plan on using it for washing as well.Mac26Mpaul wrote: To do this I empty it, then swish a few litres of water around and empty again, then add a few good splashes of white vinegar and a few litres of water and swish it around.

Put a gromet in a gallon water jug cap and pass the waterline into the jug. Buy a new jug for like a dollar every so often and you don't have to worry about cleaning and filling the water system.
Re: Cleaning fresh water bladder
Bleach will keep you from having problems! I just have a small badder that is used for cleaning/Brushing teeth/ect. Like most I use bottled water for drinking. It does not take much since the badder does not see the sun.
