Did not start our trip today

Post by ris »

The weather was kind of stormy today so we elected to put in on Sunday instead of Saturday. We have way too much stuff, too much food, too many clothes too much of every thing but fuel. Hope the boat will still float. Most of the weight is in our truck so as not to overload the trailer. Having not made a water trip this long, must confess there is a little apprehension. I guess we will take it one day at a time. We have been working very hard this week to get ready. Hard to believe we have a few projects that we will have to do on the water.

Trepidation is normal, it's a lot better than overconfidence. Trust your gut.

We leave Vero Beach in Florida heading north on the Inter Coastal Waterway (ICW) on the Great Loop. We are a couple of weeks behind Chinook. Chinook left lake Michigan Aug of 15 on the great loop. I think he is over 3100 miles as he spent time in the Bahamas this past winter on his 26X.

Well, keep the ballast in all the time, and put the heaviest stuff in the lowest holds, including right on the hull bottom (on the inside, of course; unless it's beer that needs to be kept cold  ), and watch the fore-aft distribution. Too much in the bow, and the ballast will come up through the vent. :D And sink the boat, eventually. :x

Are you traveling the Erie Canal? Or Lake Ontario?

Well there is always tomorrow, and believe me being miserable on dry land is a damn sight better than being miserable most any where else!

Best of luck!

Put in on Sunday took 2 hrs to load boat and arrange stuff. Still a lot of stuff everywhere. Had some great friends help us load and launch. One friend even brought champagne. Winds straight out of the north. We ran from Sebastian inlet state park to Melbourne Florida in 4 hours. As we were anchoring blue angels put on a airshow to welcome us. Worked on boat until dark hooking up 12volt outlets and charger outlets for phones. Also put up 5' wood mast.
We are headed for Erie Canal and Ontario.

Ris,

I don't know how slow you'll be heading north but I'll be at my place in Atlantic Beach between the 11th and the 21st. Atlantic Beach sits along the ICW where it crosses the St. John's River. If you need any logistical support or if you want to visit the downtown Jacksonville area let me know. There are a ton of free slips right in downtown or plenty of great gunkholes miles from anyone. Let me know if I can help.
