Upper middle or lower keys for mac sailing ?
Upper middle or lower keys for mac sailing ?
Checked the weather and weather looks great for a few days for a quick trip to the keys before we move away from Florida up north ....I've only had the opportunity to take our mac26x to bahia honda once and the weather was sketchy but did get it out ocean side twice for a few hours..... But that's the limited experience I have of keys and originally planned to dock there this time at 52/night but wonder if the water sailing fishing and general is nicer farther up north largo islamorada???...weather looks great and just want to enjoy my last 5 days in FL....ty for any advice.... Leave tomorrow from Cocoa beach around 3pm

South Dade marina is only 3-4 hours from Cocoa. $10 a day to store your truck and trailer. Lots of good sailing in the area.

We're at Bahia Honda right now....weather appears perfect tomorrow so may attempt bahia to sombrero tomorrow

It was pretty nice out there ... I'd never seen water that clear before... I think next trip I'm going to attempt to stay a bit longer and stay mostly in the upper keys to check out penekamp reef and some of the site's on the upper keys.... I had no idea the water would be that nice out there even got me pushing back plans for Bahamas another year or two thinking what's the point if the water is that clear out at the reefs

Although Bahia Honda with those huge tarpon is apealing also lol..... I anchored for most of one day between the two bridges trying to catch tarpon had a couple schools of HUGE 100-150lb tarpons rolling right past us but i wasnt in the prime spot by the bridge cause I had the mast up from sailing but I may leave the mast down one or two days and attempt to catch one of those huge tarpon. Undecided just know the keys is definitely my favorite spot to take the Mac

Not to discourage you from staying in Florida and the water there but....whgoffrn wrote:..... I had no idea the water would be that nice out there even got me pushing back plans for Bahamas another year or two thinking what's the point if the water is that clear out at the reefs

... Bahama water is just unbelievable and ....

...having miles of beaches all to yourself is something you just aren't going to find in the states. I love Florida and the Keys but now after going to the Bahamas they are just a stepping stone to get over there. If you get the chance to go don't put it off,

I did spend several hours last night ironically looking at your posts day by day of the exumas and yeah at some point probably when my kids get 2-3 years older and are able to help more with the boat I think I will make a trip to the exumas... I think it would require a whole summer off but think it would be well worth it.... Spent a couple hours mentally planning it last night lol think I may sell the 50hp and get a long shaft 25hp ...even in 2-3 ft waves that 50hp was useless out on ocean could never really push faster than 7kts without throwing spray everywhere so thinking two 25hp engines (one as a spare)

I agree with Sumner. We have sailed the keys from Largo to West and thought that was the best. Since going over to the Bahamas that is what Florida is made for, A stepping stone to better sailing and even more beautiful waters.
