I use the 4 TO 1 block and tackle same as the boom vang. I have a furler, baby stays to the mast and the jin pole. I attach the bottom block to the anchor cleat running the pull line all the way to the cockpit so that I can use the wench and cam cleat to raise and hold if needed. This arrangement allows the mast and fuller to be stabilized while raising and to stop if any tangles occur.
I have now added a anchor roller well secured to the deck which I hook the bottom block to. This allows enough tension on the mast to secure it with the free, unused, jib halyard, to the bow pulpit. Now using the Johnson Lever , you can easily pin the furler.

Re: Mast Raising with Furler ? Newbie
I just don't like to be in the cockpit during mast raising/lowering. If the block/tackle still requires a lewmar winch then it's less appealing to me.
I just lowered the mast with the worm drive winch and it was super easy. Raising is the only chore. Dunno, still thinking about my options. There are worm drive winches that have a hex handle to power drive them with a drill, that might be the best of all worlds.
