Mooring / Docking single handed

Post by Dutch01527 »

The single most difficult aspect of getting to know my new :macx: for me has been coming alongside and mooring/docking the boat when single handed or with my wife (same as single handed at the moment). I have been caught out by winds pushing the boat off the jetty or bouy a number of times, last weekend resulting in a torn calf muscle as I jumped off the boat to the jetty.

I have just ordered a boat hook / mooring line handler from these people http://www.wrino.com. I hope that means that I can get a line attached from the boat as long as I am within 6 foot of a dock cleat. Just for the record, I have no connection or commercial interest with this company.

Are you mooring, or are you going to be docking?

If you are going to be mooring, this may help more than a boat hook? Image

You just reach down, grab it, and pull aboard. The rod sticks up far enough for you to just reach over and grab it.

Extendable boat hooks can do just that, expand when you hook onto something while the boat's mass is working against you, They are great for pushing off of things, or grabbing onto some flotsam, but be certain that if you are grabbing onto a cleat while docking, HOLD ON :D

Boathooks are a consumable, right? Like gas and water and toilet paper.

But when will they start making them biodegradeable, so they don't silt up our harbors?

LOL! :D

And the corollary of that....If you have a mask and fins and know where to look, boat hooks are free! :D

I use a Garelick (which was found in a popular anchoring area here off a sandy beach) which I marked off in one-foot intervals so it can double as a precise measuring stick for bottom depth.

Garelick's float (at first at least, or I wouldn't have this one).

Back on topic, I think the Wrino is a quality tool that should serve you well Dutch.

Both mooring and docking. I am a ex Merchant Navy guy and the terms are used interchangeably on big ships, you dock a ship or moor a ship alongside - same thing. I sometimes forget that when sailing the terms have a different meaning.

The hook is not used to pull the boat alongside, it is used to place a mooring line over a cleat / bouy or snap a spring shackle onto a cleat / bouy.

Yup - why I buy "floating" everything when I can find it. :)

Looks even better, about twice the cost but would probably have bought one if I had seen it first.

I would like to see a similar demo under conditions of wind, most especially wind blowing a Mac away from the dock, or trying to use the device with boat wakes :D

Twice as much? I paid $15 for my extendable boat hook. This is $150. Way cool though.

Twice as much as the Wrino I have just ordered. My normal boat hook is not much use in a heavy wind. These devices place a secured, short line onto a cleat / bouy that can then be pulled in at leisure and holds the boat until full lines are attached.

Just think of how lucky we power sailor owners are, at any point we can grab a huge handful of throttle to get us out of situations, we may have a lot of freeboard but conventional boat owners dont have a huge prop to help back out if you think you got it wrong.

PS some days Im sure my X would almost sail as fast sideways as it foes forward when the wind grabs it :D

That would definitely be an advantage. At one time I thought of getting an :macx: or :macm: but I guess I'm just a glutton for punishment. :|
