Mast Clamps To Hold All The Mast Rigging in Transit
Mast Clamps To Hold All The Mast Rigging in Transit
Hi All
Just finished making some wooden clamps to go around the mast to keep everything in place when raising and lowering the mast and also when in transit. They work very well and make packing up on your own even more simple. Check out the photos on Photobucket. They are made from cheap 12mm ply wood. They hinge on the bottom screw and clamp on using an 8mm nylon bolt and wing nut.

Very nice. I like the "clamp on" feature......any chance you'd be willing to send a pattern/template to a fellow MacOwner?

kcmj,
The clamps look nice, but if I am seeing correctly, you do not have any support for the furler which extends beyond the pulpit. That is not good. The furler should not just dangle.
If I am not seeing this correctly, I apologize. If I am observing correctly, this needs to be rectified.

I just zip tied my boat pole to the furler, the mast, and the pulpit. It works fine. Three aluminum tubes compressed inside an extendible pole gives plenty of strength.rszobel wrote:do you have template drawn that you could provide ? I used to do that, but for longer term storage (over winter) i used different approach i saw somewhere here. I took large diameter PVC split down the middle, bolted back to back and offset so that the one underneath fits atop the mast and the one above acts as a cradle for the end of the furler. Very solid for transportation purposes.

I didn't the same thing. I copied this http://www.macgregorsailors.com/modt/index.php?view=475 from the Mods section.rszobel wrote:I used to do that, but for longer term storage (over winter) i used different approach i saw somewhere here. Both look good, but boat space is at a premium. When the boat is rigged, the pole then goes back to the use it was designed for. Nothing extra to store.

Re: Mast Clamps To Hold All The Mast Rigging in Transit
Would your guys look
at this??

Oh Man, kcmj - where the hull were you two weeks ago when I was trying to figure out this problem?? I created this heavy mahogany pieces of crap that have a long 5 foot piece of half round PVC to hold the middle of the thing and now I look here after I did all that work and you come up with a brilliant idea that is about ten thousands times better than the piece of crap I created!!!
Only 2 posts and he has already earned the best mod award! ! !
Wow.
Now I need to completely start all over again and do this the right way: ie: the kcmj way.
Way to go - brilliant! ! !

I hang my head is shame when I read about the great stuff you guys get at your local big name hardware stores.
We have 2 big chain hardware stores here and they are just copies of each other, they stock exactly the same stuff, some times from different brands but the same stuff, one cant pop down the store and get a bit of teak or any of the better woods, onl rubbish pine, in fact they dont even stock hardwood that hasnt been fully dress and marked up through the roof for the privilege and thats only in one type of wood.
Shame on you Bunnings and Masters Hardware

Re: Mast Clamps To Hold All The Mast Rigging in Transit
I made some H-shaped standoffs for the furler and an extended support for the bow.
We also use a center-support for the mast. Works well for us.

Im big on the center support idea, the whole mast bounces without one

I like that extension support for the furler drum. Very clever. Beats the heck out of the aluminum crutch I use!
Re: Mast Clamps To Hold All The Mast Rigging in Transit
Hi all
Thanks for the nice comments. Here is the template on Photobucket. I made the template to fit exactly onto an A4 sheet of paper but when you download the image from Photobucket, it some how gets resized as I did a border-less test print and it came out the wrong size. I will be making a new clamp system for the furler at the bow. I will share this too when finished.
I have this clamp as an image for hand cutting
I also have a .tap file if you have access to a CNC router
I also have an .skp file for all those that use google Sketch up
If anyone would like a template in any of these formats, just email me on <[email protected]>

This will be the support extension for the furler.
