So if I understand Tom's theory, the horizontals sticking out will be fastened to the head partition and the movable sections will slide progressively out... Sort of a two stage pocket door. Makes more sense than what I was thinking. Well done.

My revised theory...

I agree that this sliding door system mounts on the forward surface of the aft head wall. Makes sense, since it would be replacing the stock folding head door; his hint that it is replacing something. Not being an M owner, I rely on Google pics and have to guess dimensions, that's what threw me off about the middle section. Makes more sense that both panels would retract.

The snore, fart, party hint has me confused as to what the issue is that this solution solves! I assumed it was to isolate the farting and partying from the snoring, but now the snoring AND farting would be isolated from the partying...so long as the snorers and the farters can tolerate each other! :D

Nope it,s not a fart retarder lol, this was discussed earlier on another thread , v-berth extender , open bulk head concept & stateroom extension all in one .
reading this from Brandon MB towing my boat across Canada to Victoria BC almost half way there

Your right Tom, - it's been done before.

My issue was the weight. I wanted to make sure it did not weight more than the thing it replaces. The problem is those metal drawer slides weigh a ton, so I only used 2 of them. The rest of the slide is made of wood. That brought the weight of the whole thing down to the same as the original door. I always wanted to totally private stateroom in the boat with full facilities so this is it. The whole thing actually takes up less room that the original because it's only two doors instead of three sandwiched together so it is thinner than the original when stowed..

I won't have time to work on it until next week and then I can post a picture.

Hey Cat,

Yes, that is the rub - I always said I liked the X interior better - the thing is I wanted to say this here instead of in the emails I have been receiving the past week so people know what they are getting into if they try this mod: (please forgive me guys for being so messed up but right now 'boat' it tore up pretty good).

Here is the deal - to do this job right you need to remove ALL the bulkheads in the front of the boat - You need to (of course) remove the folding door (that's obvious) and to really do this right so you get your measurements and connections right you need to remove the wall between the dinette and the head. (!) :!:

So, since I removed that wall, I figured to go one better and I removed the wall between the head and the forward berth too. This, in essence turns the M boat into an X boat with no head. :o

Now, I know your all looking at each other going :? why ? why? :( why is 'boat' such an idiot?? :( Well, I had one last LED round flush light to install in the head and I needed to remove that forward bulkhead to do a flush mount properly (I will send pictures - it's too hard to explain) so since I was going into major tear-down mode I decided to do it all. Now, why do you ask I needed to remove the OTHER wall between the dinette and the head? Well, the mirror on the one side is an issue for doing fasteners - the wall is not real thick so it's a good idea to get a good fastener in there that can fit UNDER that mirror, SO you need to remove the wall, AND remove the mirror! Then you can set your fasteners flush, and then put the mirror back on. (Your all right, it's true - I am crazy).

So, the whole interior of the boat gets torn out and then put back in. I'm not done yet and my work and personal schedule is conflicting with the time I need to do this.

One mystery I can answer now since I removed the walls that many people have asked about the M boat in regards to the strength of the deck above - i can now tell you I have tested this - with ALL the walls removed there is absolutely no difference in the move or flex on the deck. The walls do not add any structural component to the deck at all - it makes no difference - apparently the deck is fully supported by the dagger-board well only. I jumped up and down up there with my fat ass and added some other people too and we could not get any flex out of the deck. The walls are just walls.

So, I'm trying to get boat put back together as fast as I can - I have not even done the varnish on the new doors yet - when it's done a sliding door will close off the entire forward section to be a private stateroom so you can use the pottie with room to stretch your legs and bend over and wipe your A... and well all the other things that we all take for granted in the bathroom. It's gonna be a really nice dressing room for the ladies too. I will send pictures when can.

Well, I have to ask - does anyone actually use the forward compartment on the M for sleeping? I'm pretty short and to me it looks like a torture chamber. Small kids I can imagine, but a couple of adults? And that's not even considering that if your feet are forward then your head is down, unless you have a lot of weight forward (maybe that works if you're heavy..)

And.... of course, you get to share your berth companion's bathroom breaks.

Right, that's the point - and since it's only me an the wife on board the decision to turn the entire forward section into a private bath (with lounge) just made sense. We sleep under the cockpit of course - which is probably the biggest bed anyone will ever sleep on on any boat under 32 feet long. So now the M boat I have not only has the largest main berth of any 30 foot boat but the largest bathroom too.
