Yamaha 60 High Thrust

Finally the replacement for the dead E-tec is up and running, a nice new Yamaha High Thrust 60 with a 14x11 Dual Thrust prop. I fitted my own Lowrance LMF gauges as the Yamaha Command Link gauges were too big for the old OMC/Evinrude gauge holes. Apparently Evinrude just rebadge Lowrance gauges for their I-Command gauges so they fit perfectly in the old holes

Hope to get out in the next couple of weeks to test the rig and see how it compares to the old 60hp E-tec. I will report back on the stats when I have done so.

Welcome to the community of Yamaha owners. I put a new 50 Yamaha HT with the dual thrust prop on my X four years ago and have never been disappointed. Engine has been extraordinarily reliable. I did, however, replace my whole fuel system at the same time---tanks, lines, and fuel filter, just to have a complete system "reboot".

I was cheapskate, I only replaced 1/2 my fuel system. But to be fair the next upgrade in a year or two is a custom 100l fuel tank under the rear berth so I could not see the point of replacing my old plastic portable tanks and Evinrude fitting

I am looking forward to comparing fuel and speed figures to the E-tec, those dual thrust props look a beast even compared to the Evinrude 14x11. Yamaha claim;

• Increases forward thrust by 70 percent
  Increases reverse thrust by 60 percent
  Provides superior braking ability

Kurz from everything I have read on this forum and from Rodger in the s manual those hydrofoils are bad juju on Macs. I don't travel on plane very often and most manufactures will void the warranty if you go drilling into your lower unit. So not even on my radar for at least 4 years if ever

Okay I got out yesterday and broke the new Yammy in, it now has 4.3 hours on the clock.

Short answer I am happy with it.

Compared to the Etec.

The Good;
Seems to be more responsive when maneuvering, the Dual Thrust does seem to turn slightly tighter and have better grip on the water. It is very noticeable in reverse the thing acts almost like a brake and stops you dead in the water with not much throttle .
Debatable whether it is quieter than the Etec in decibels but the noise is a lower frequency from the Yammy and less annoying and is not difficult to talk over even at higher RPM. I found the Etec annoying and difficult to talk over at higher revs, this could just be me as I do have slight hearing loss.
Vibration, Etec always left my butt feeling a bit numb after a high speed run with the vibration through the captain's chair, no vibration at all from the Yammy. 2 vs 4 cylinders better balance
Absolutely no exhaust smell the Etec every now and then gave a whiff of it's 2 stroke heritage.

The not so Good;
WOT speed is a about 2 knots slower than Etec. WOT RPM was 5550 vs 5800
Fuel consumption at my most used setting of 2000 rpm for about 5 knots of boat speed was about 30% more at 2.9l/h vs 2.2l/h, I am told this should improve as the motor loosens up and is re-tuned after it's first 20hr service, we will see
Planing seemed slower to achieve and acceleration was slower less punchy than with the Etec.

All in all I am happy with the Yammy if the fuel useage comes down at 2000rpm to that of the Etec I will be very happy as I am a cruiser not a racer

It was a 2008 so just on 9 years old with only 134 hours on the clock. I did not give up on it, it gave up on me EMM blew

We are thinking to replace outboard also.
Currently have 2007 Yamaha F60 near 300hrs. WOT 5200 with 12.1x9 prop.
Thinking the Yamaha F70 as it is the same size motor. Fitting under the captains seat is the concern.

T60 and the F70 are almost the same motor except the 70 has 4 valves per cylinder and lightweight pistons to give the extra 10 ponies.

From Yamaha's sales blurb..

Total intake valve area is increased 17%, while the pistons and valves are up to 10% lighter (when compared to our T60 model), giving it substantially more horsepower-per-litre of engine displacement

My T60 fits under the helm seat no problem. When I got the T60 it was on sale $1000 cheaper than the F70 and at 2000rpm where I spend most of my time neither is maxing out their HP. I also saw articles that suggested the F70 was tuned for top end performance and is cammed more aggressively to make 70hp and might actually be a touch weaker/less fuel efficient below 4500rpm it is aimed more at the high speed planning market, whereas the T60 was designed for pontoon boats which I think more accurately represent our s usage.
