Does this 19 seem like a good deal?

Post by watchdoc »

So I found a 19 for sale around 3 grand. Comes with a good running 15hp merc and a recently refurbished painted trailer.

My plan would be to repower with a 40 and upgrade to a aluminum trailer. It also needs a few misc repairs so I'm worried I would have too much money in it.

thoughts and opinions appreciated.

Well, I don't know about the rest of the crowd here, but without photos it's pretty dang hard to tell. Got any?

The motor and the trailer, if both are in good shape, probably are worth about $2K I'd say... so... given it's in reasonable shape it sounds about right.

I don't know how to post links but it's listed in the myrtle beach craigslist.

To get an idea of what a :mac19: is selling for I did a search using SearchTempest.com. Here are all the Craigslist.com ads that I could find.

https://tampa.craigslist.org/hil/boa/d/ ... 91843.html
1994, $3500, galvanized trailer, 1998 9.9hp 2-stroke

https://washingtondc.craigslist.org/nva ... 71834.html
1993, $9500, galvanized trailer, "original 40hp Tohatsu" with 60hp Johnson installed

1994, $4561, painted trailer, 15hp

The one in St Augustine sold last month. Owner didn't pull the ad.

Well, as a former :mac19: owner and upgrader I'd say it will take a couple grand on top of the purchase price to get her back to top shape. Pics don't show the mast, boom, etc. good chance the standing rigging might need work. All doable but takes $s.

Looks like I can buy it without the engine for 2 grand. I actually have a 9.9 regular shaft merc but I guess that would be useless?

Any tips on repowering if I go this route?

Would it be cost-effective to find a long leg for your 9.9? That's assuming your Merc is in good shape and worth the modification, of course.

But since the boat has a helm, not just a tiller, I'd want remote engine control, including engine steering. But that's just me, being spoiled. :|

Not sure what you mean by a helm. It doesn't have a steering wheel like a 26x. I corrected my previous post. My 9.9 is a regular 20" shaft. Just not the long 25" shaft.

With that being said, what is the correct shaft length for an :mac19: ?

I think a helm could be a tiller or a wheel. The 19 has a tiller, right?

So it doesn't. I didn't know that. Since it was the original Mac motor-sailor, I always assumed it had a wheel, like the later :macx: and :macm: boats. :?

The :mac19: has a tiller for the rudders but I believe you can also steer it with a tiller on the engine. I have no experience with these boats so it's not clear to me the preferred method of steering under power.

I can shed some light on the steering situation. The :mac19: has a tiller for the rudders for when you are sailing. You need to get the rudders up for motoring. The wood tiller flips up out of the way and you steer with the motor tiller.

If you are only going to use a 9.9 hp motor , I would suggest getting a 26c. the 26c will sail faster. The only advantage of the 19 is it can take a bigger motor. I would not suggest a 19 with anything less than a 25hp.

I hope this helps.

The 9.9 would just be for testing and sorting while I shop for a 40. It actually goes on my 10' Twin Vee dingy.

I would like to get a new 4 stroke 40 with a fancy new warranty and all the bells and whistles but I'm not sure how much sense it makes to spend 5 grand on a motor for a 2 grand boat.

Any engine buying advice would be appreciated.

So I missed the one in Myrtle beach. Sold for 3 grand with the 2005 15hp tiller engine. Got a line on a couple others but they are far away so I'm trying to work the logistics. Please PM me or post in this thread if you know of any more for sale.
