I like the idea of hard top dodger but how do you deal with raising and lowering the mast? I have measured on my and when the mast is lowered to the stern mast crutch, there is about 8” clearance above rear of sliding hatch. I see 3 options:
1. Mast lowers onto dodger. Requiring raising rear support several feet. The dodger may support the weight but you would not be able to unpin the mast due to the leverage of the dodger not being beyond the Center point of the mast. Pinning would be even more difficult.
2. The dodger is removed to lower the mast. Like the soft tops.
3. Create some kind of opening through the dodger to allow the mast to drop to the stern mast support. I once saw a with a glass windshield with a Center pane that swung open to allow the mast to drop through the window.

one can see why a hard dodger would be nice .Its always raining here, just the angle changes

i am just trying to get a handle on something that is going to go with the lines on the , aesthetically speaking!
i will be removing the slider on mine.

as for the very valid points with regards to lowering the mast, i am actually in the process of a total re design of the rig on my , and that wont be an issue for my situation.
good points though!!
i do see a way around it, but that may be for someone else to work with

I have put a lot of thought into the hard dodger concept. Mine would only be about 14 inches high. It would fit onto the sliding hatch rails and be removable with a few bolts.

Somewhere along the line I had saved some pics of an example hardtop. Would be nice to have something like that.

yup still working on that.
needing to build up funds as i go along.
a 5' model was built of the
and also one of the proposed boat hull, they are going to be tested in a wave/tow tank.
once the hull configuration is all figured, then its onto the "easy" stuff of designing the rest of the boat.

the key with this design, is to have a true planing hull, but without a transom that doesnt drag in the water when sailing!

thanks everyone for the pics. i am just trying to get an idea of whats really going to suit the aesthetics of the boat, so it doesnt look like a block glued on top

mallard, some things i like about that one, and some i dont like
i like the camber in the roof, and the extended visor.
i dont like that it would be kinda tough to go forward topsides.
i am thinking something a wee bit more"euro stylish" to match the boat, and yet still be utilitarian. but that is quite close!

not that we are blue watering with these boats, but i might split that windshield in two- just to make it a tad sturdier.

Speaking of Euro style... Just build a 28ft + trailer sailor style after a 'Southerly' and my wife will buy it on the spot. 28-30ft, 8'6" beam (meets US Interstate regs, no one check the 2 lane regs anyway). 4-5k lbs displacement works for all the pickups, larger SUV's. Big fat class A's are all 8'6" wide and never get pulled over. There done... I draft the PO.
