COVID-19 just got real

We are planing a trip to Annapolis from Philly. Our plans are for this to happen in mid June. The elephant in the room is the Corona Virus.

As has been pointed out, contact with a variety land obligations, necessities, etc.will create situations where we will be risking contact with the virus. That is what we have to weigh. At this time, it is iffy, but we are attentive to the worsening situation.

This excerpt is the latest I have read in the Philadelphia Inquirer.

“ Here’s the rub, according to experts: Whether emergency measures are stringent (mitigation) or ultra-stringent (suppression), COVID-19 will come roaring back when people resume their normal routines because they still have no immune defense against the new virus.

An influential report published this week by Imperial College London concluded that “the main challenge” of suppression is that it needs “to be maintained — at least intermittently — for as long as the virus is circulating in the human population, or until a vaccine becomes available” in 12 to 18 months.

The Penn scientists, meanwhile, predict that staying home could reduce spread of the virus to near zero by late May. But if the precautions are eased, two to four more rounds of mitigation will be needed until a vaccine is developed and administered to at least 145 million people in the United States.

“If we are lucky, and an effective vaccine is quickly developed, this could happen by the fall of 2021,” they wrote.”

I'm wondering what folks are thinking about this coming boating season. Are marinas operating in your area? How about fuel docks? Anyone moving forward with plans for major trips? Covid 19 seems to be a real wild card. What strange times.

All New Mexico state parks are closed until April 9. All of our lakes are in State parks. Will have to see what happens after that date.

There are a few other treatments being tested as well like Avigan an anti viral medication from Japan and two others in Michigan along with HCQ trial on 1500 participants almost a month in. Looks promising.

I preferred to drink Tecate when I was in Mexico. Personally, I don't think Corona is that good of a beer. They have good advertising. I was in Veracruz one New Years Eve, where they make Kahlua, and they had free Kahlua in the hotel bar that I was staying in, until midnight. The only other time that I saw more puke was when the unit I was in in Africa got food poisoning.

Aside from my "runs" or running off at the mouth I always have been curious about why the Corona beer does not settle well in my tummy yet the Pacifica does. There is an old myth about the Corona beer I will not expound on here but I do seem to have a sensitive gut in regards to leftover bacteria in beer. Miller Lite is SO heavily processed to lower the carbohydrates in it your guaranteed all bugs have been starved to death and are dead. I drink that stuff with no issues -

yet Budweiser will make me ill even though it's pasteurized.

Now Coors is cold filtered - it's not cooked like Bud, yet I wonder if they really can filter out ALL the bugs?? Maybe that's why I get a hit or miss with that one.

And we have breweries all over the place here and your really drinking a glass of bacteria when you have that stuff. Sometimes good, sometimes not.

I really like beer - but because of my gut issues i have been forced to become aware of bacteria and how it's processed in various brands of beer.
People who make beer are experts on bacteria, but unfortunately they can't help us with COVID because it's not a bacteria - it's a virus. I don't think beer works on virus.

In Nam we drank 33/Ba Muoi Ba beer which was rumored to have a formaldehyde base. The legacy does remain - the newer emulsions created must have the formaldehyde flavor, otherwise it will change the flavor of the beer

Did CW back in the old days but never keyed much when 2 meter got more prevalent. No ba ba but a lot of dash and dit. My buddy was a crypto (those guys get shot for talking in their sleep) but that was long after TET.

"tam" would be the way we said that back in the days of President Johnson when it was just Southeast Asia. Then when it became 'Indochina' I think they used the language of the poor people. Those were the refugee folks that poured into my neighborhood in South L.A. back in the 70's. They said: "ba".

Amongst the pot smoking kids getting high in front of their Nixon posters under black lights in their parents garages I recall a lot of talk about 333 beer or "ba ba ba" beer. "Like it's really bitchin, Man!" and tales of the formaldehyde beer that everyone claimed to have had yet I could never find.

Always wondered about that stuff.

These are good comments.

The thing with this virus is that there are two "good" times to get it: first is before everyone else so that if you need intensive care you can get it, and second is after a viable medicine or vaccine is found. If you get it at the same time as everyone else (in the wave that is inevitable without social distancing) and with no viable or available medicine, you are likely screwed if you have any pre-existing medical problems or are in your senior years.

The current social-distancing campaign is not designed to solve the virus. It is designed to allow time for the healthcare system to prepare and for researchers to develop treatment and/or vaccine. It is unrealistic to think that an effective vaccine is coming before a wave of patients overwhelm healthcare systems worldwide, but if we are lucky an effective treatment may be discovered. It doesn't look like hydrocholoroquine will be the magic pill, but Remdesivir and other anti-virals are giving some hope.

So if you can stay home and put off that trip, I would highly recommend it. Depending on where you live, if you get the virus now (and without social distancing you will) you are in between time 1 when the healthcare system can accommodate you and time 2 when there is an effective and available treatment. Forget the vaccine, that comes way later.

Almost everyone is going to get this virus. But if you can delay WHEN you get it to the point where the healthcare system has ramped up and has a supply of an effective medicine, then it won't be so bad. You don't want it now. Stay home.
