MacGregor 19

Post by halflinger41 »

Just wondering if anyone out there knows if it is even possible too find a MacGregor 19? I understand they stopped building them in about 1997 and I only found a few for sale in Washinton State on boat websites.

Do people generally go through brokers to find a hard to find used boat or would a broker not bother because they would not be making much of a commission??? I doubt there are any other boats out there about the same as the Macgregor 19, unless one gets a Macgregor 26M which a little on the big side for us. Any info would be appeciated.

I found mine on Craigslist. They do pop up once in awhile. Setup a search in craigslist and save it so you get notified if one pops up for sale. I did this as well as on eBay.

I see them on ebay a couple times a year. There was one in the past week or so with a buy-it-now button ($3000 maybe?). It's not there any more, so it must have sold.

Save searches on ebay and craigs list and wait.

prices on the 19 appear to be rising - up to 3 and even 4 grand now - the original price of the boat new was only 6 grand!!

That's what happens when there is no competition for a boat - there is no other 19 that I am aware of that can do what the MAC 19 does.

Is that going to happen to the 26 as inventories dwindle?

they only made about 1000 :mac19: before they moved on to the :macx: Model as they could build an X for about the same price & sell for a lot more money the 19 had hard chines so was sailing on an inverted V when heeled so very little lee way but the hard chines made them more labour expensive to make & their was a bigger demand for a bigger boat , I had one for 4 yrs they were a great day sailor for 4 people or wk-end sailor for two they had a lot of cabin space for an 19ft boat some people added gas struts to the opening hatch & converted them into a pop up top for standing headroom
Happy Hunting !

I've got a :mac19: I intend to sell in the spring. It's a little small now for the family. I haven't tested the market around here (Vancouver Island) but I hope to get much more than US$3k, considering what I paid five years ago. Overall great shape, garage kept, if anyone is interested...

I raise the top on mine 2' on all 4 corners. I used 1" flagpole holders that West Marine was selling at a very good close out price. I tried dowel rod, etc. until I found that aluminum tubing from crutches, bought at a second hand store, fit just right. A mosquito net over the top works good if necessary. I also have a left over pop-top cover for a Mac 26C that I will modify to fit.

We've had our :mac19: for 24 yrs. and still love it. A few yrs. ago we were returning home from a lake trip and stopped for gas. Pulling in behind us was a tour bus which started unloading passengers for a pit stop. Half the passengers went inside the other half started taking pictures of our :mac19: ??? Too weird :? Even a 27 yr. old :mac19: still looks, I guess. You should get a good $ for yours sl duck :)

I pulled my Mac 19 closer to my shop today with my XM501E3. It's the only one I sold and when he wanted to sell it I bought it back. I'm going to put it in Okauchee Lake which I live on. I've never put it here before. It was always in Lake Michigan, or I kept it down in Punta Gorda Florida for several years. I liked to go to Cayo Costa, an island state park. I went there last winter and an earlier hurricane had destroyed the bay, etc. that I liked to go to. So, I brought it home.
I had made aluminum rudders from C scow lee boards that go down about 24" from the pivot point. I had noticed that the Mac 19 rudder posts were similar to the 26C rudder post so I drilled holes in the top of them, dropped 1/4" line down them, and can now lower and raise them. And I can steer under sail. The original rudders were not much better down than they were up.They were supposed to be held down with bronze shear pins or hardwood dowels. Mine will kick up if I hit something as I wrap the old-down line around a cleat instead of a figure 8.

The ones at $8-10k sit forever in the classifieds. The 3k (bate) to 5k (equipped) ones sell in 2-3 months.

Lots in FL TX MD areas in various listing sites

Bump..
I thought I'd reply to this thread instead of making a new one.
I'm looking for a Mac 19 to replace my Siren 17.
Looking at prices here in Ontario and BC... People are nuts! 10.5k... The boat sold new for 6k.
I'm looking to spend 3-4k. Less for a fixer upper. I have cash in hand.
I live in London Ontario and am willing to travel or have it shipped. (Borders are iffy right now. (Aug 2020))
Can one ship a boat over the Can. US. boarder during Covid 19?
Anyway I thought I'd post here and see what the MacGregor Sailors group has to offer.
I can be contacted by PM or find my email in my profile.

Man, the Sharps must be kicking themselves.

Who wouda predicted Corona the Virus??

Now because people are avoiding hotels and cruise ships like the plague everyone wants an RV and a boat.

The Tattoo 22 would have been sold out for years to come if it were in production.

Oh Well.

Unless u find a :mac19: with an original trl & eng. and a bare bones boat as things like roof top grab rails & stern rails , roller furling r all extra options when the boat sold new so best of luck finding ur price range !
when I bought my :mac19: it came with a new alum trl, a 40hp zusi 4 stroke that was only a couple yrs old & some nice equipment & extra,s when I sold it I had no problem getting my asking price . there was only about 1000 of these boats produced so they r a rare find took me 3 yrs patiently searing for mine lol
U might find something USA side cheaper, then u have to import plus dollar diff. likely get an old beat up engine & rusted out trl needing a lot of work & needing all new standing & running rigging so ching ching $$$$
why r u after a :mac19: any particular reason !, I wanted a :mac19: because I wanted to make sure this was what I wanted before I sold my cuddy cabin cruiser , after sailing the :mac19: for 4 yrs I moved up too an new :macm: in 2008 & sold my other two boats a couple yrs later
why not go for a :macx: u,d likely get a better deal & a bigger boat just sayin that,s All
b glad to hear ur response & how u make out , when I had my :mac19: for the 4 yrs I had it I mostly spent wk-ends staying overnight on it so that,s why I moved up to the :macm: . but the :mac19: is a great day sailer & a big boat inside for a 19ft & a head is great if u got a woman & kids on board it,s ok for the occasional wk-ender

I just missed a 19 here in Ontario for $4800. Had a 2010 40hp. It looked like the sails were always kept folded... I was sailing in OwenSound when a buddy sent me the Kijiji link. By the time I was anchored and was good to call it was gone! I saw 3 19's go for less than 4k last summer... I didn't want one then.
The reason I want a 19... (I have a Mac26D and a Siren 17)
My Mac is set up great. Except for the mast raising. I have the pole thing... It sucks. It's easier to ask a passer by to help for a min while I walk the mast up. I single hand the Mac all the time but want something small for when I go exploring in the nooks and crannies of Georgian Bay. (Think East and North sides.) The 19 has the swing keel to depth sound with.
The Siren17 is 2" too short. I have to slouch when I'm in the cabin. (I'm only 5'10") That isn't fun for my back when you do it for a week at a time. Like last week.
The 19 is set up nicely too. It has an in closed head. Sink etc. Head room too! I can sit up strait in it! Mast raising is easy like the Siren on a Mac19. It also breaks down and goes in the cabin. Handy as it's out of the way when it's in the driveway.
I don't really care about a big motor and I know what the stock trailer is like.
I'm not looking to go fast. I'm looking for single handed ease and utility. If I had that extra room (Both head and storage) I'm sure I'd have it behind the car more. The Siren is super easy to set up and launch. Just too short to want to spend a weekend on with my wife. (We did do a week in the Thousand Islands in the Siren a few years back! She prefers the Mac26D but I'm sure she would love the Mac19)
You mentioned the X. I missed one for $2500 this summer... Again.. Sailing in Georgian Bay... No cell signal until I was in Lions Head. It was gone as well.
I like layout of the X. Not the wheel so much.
