What holds the galley top on?

Yeah, it's great! The little ballast spline that is part of the dinette floor is now my bar rail for my foot when I'm pouring the grog! I might even get a piece of fancy brass diamond plate or something to put over it to really complete the 'bar' look! (Now i just need to figure out how to run an ice maker - (that might be asking for too much)).

Ice machine:

Dometic Adler/Barbour CU-200, with optional water cooling kit and evaporator/freezer. 12VDC, water-cooled. It's the most efficient way to make ice on a boat, and the entire unit will fit inside the sliding galley so you can build your own insulated cold-box into it. Although it would be much simpler to plumb in a non-moving location. Boat show price was $1300.

Hi All,

While this thread has been about Mac 26M countertop tile removal am I correct in assuming the same applies to a Mac 26X?

I tried getting a hard putty knife under it and a thin chisel but only succeeded in chipping it.
Did Macgregor epoxy the tiles down to fiberglass in a recess cut in the gelcoat?

Has anyone been successful in actually removing the countertop tiles without making a "godawfulmessaboutit"?

I'm not sure if it came factory or not but my 1998 26X has white 4" subway tile on the counter around the Origo stove.
I really don't care for the way it looks and am planning on eventually removing it.

Hi All!

Well it was the factory set-up. Operative word is "was" now.

I was busy cutting through it today with a a Ryobi Multitool and a carbide grit tile cutter.....Lots of ceramic dust and fiberglass.
The little wet/dry vacuum really did yeoman service today. We are really glad that is out of the way.

We can definitely say that the factory installed tiles are in a recess in the top of the galley fiberglass on the Mac 26X built in 2001.
The tiles are recessed about 50% into the fiberglass top and seem to be secured with a high grip adhesive that has hardened up over the years but has not lost ANY it's grip. I suspect that Macgregor made the recess to make it easier to install the tiles consistently on a production basis and it probably how the majority of Mac 26X and M galley tiles were installed.

There is also a fiberglass reinforcement channel underneath the top surface if anyone is interested to the aft third of the top.

So now on to the rest of the work to be done......

Now that it has been cut and it can closely examined. If someone else was interested in removing the tiles it might be possible to soften the adhesive carefully with a heat gun and a stiff putty knife. But by the time the adhesive softens and the tiles lift I suspect the gel coat will discolor and the fumes would be a really BIG STINK.

While cutting generated dust and took some time it appears to be the less of the two approaches. AND we still would have been cutting the top fiberglass anyway to accomplish what we want to do with the galley mod we are after.

I'm thinking of doing the same. IIRC my '06 has fiberglass tabs epoxied to the galley and top. Looks like I can get in there with an oscillating cutter and separate. For the top options: vertical grade Corian solid surface (only 6mm thick), Nida Core with fiberglass top, faired and painted, or hardwood. I found a local cabinet shop with left over vertical grade Corian sheets which may save a lot of time an look great. Easy to machine and glue up.

My 2007M didn't have tile work. But no stove either... just sink.

We’re gonna do a two step for or new galley top.

There is a shallow tray area about 2-1/2” deep under the whole galley top for place mats, silverware, cooking utensils, etc...

The first top surface is a maple veneer 5/8” thick 7 layer plywood we are going to try as a 2 piece lid over the tray with hinges along the wall.
A clip-on sink will fit on the bow end of the galley when needed. The sink stores away in the side bench along with a removable grey water canister.

It’s a bit heavy but it’s handy.... We’re also going to put a 10” x 10” Granite 1/4” tile on it for a place to put a hot pan. The surface is big enough for our 2 burner propane fold away stove.

Our preference would be for a lighter thinner top surface but we use what we have.

Here is the galley remodel we did. We put a Dickenson 2 burner stove in and a bar sink from the depot with a single lever faucet.

I have a 95 26x on which the tiles started flaking apart. I guess due to age and winter freezing. It took an hour with a hammer, cold chisel and putty knife to get them off. Hammering the putty knife under the tiles was effective. They all broke to pieces. Now I have to decide whether to retile or fit some other counter top.
