Hull Water Stains

Post by el Timador »

Hello,

Just curious if there is a better way to clean the stains off the hull.

The entire bottom of the boat is like this and I'm hoping I don't have to scrub it to much to get it clean.

Once clean does a wax job help to keep it clean, or easier to clean off later on? And is chemical cleaning on gelcoat a concern?

Thanks once again.

This stuff works great. But it's an acid so wear lots of protection. Won't hurt fiberglass, but will hurt you.

Yes, wax will help.

I'll second what Russ said above only don't buy the name brand stuff like in the link or Star-Brite. Just go to your hardware store and buy a gallon of muriatic acid and dilute 50/50 with water, which is the active ingredient in these cleaners. You're looking at ~$10 vs ~$50. Rub it on with a soft brush/mop (I use this) and keep the area you're working on wet and you'll see all that stuff slowly melt away. You want to rinse this stuff off your trailer quickly as it will eat into metal and I understand it will discolor galvanized metal, so cover your trailer with a tarp if you think it's necessary. I have the OEM steel trailer and it hasn't affected it. Wear gloves and you might want to wear a respirator too if you don't have great ventilation.

Try the regular stuff used for cleaning up toilets--available in any grocery store at a fraction of the cost

If the environment is of any concern, look into Slimy Grimy.
They make a variety of products.

I buy a tub of granular, mix it with warm water in a gallon sprayer.
