Simple mod for boat hook storage

Post by Idiotfool »

I ordered some 3M command solutions for mop storage and set them up at the cabin top near the companionway. Easy to reach, but out of the way.

I am sure you are like most of us on the forum in that DO we use boat hooks regularly. That is a nice storage solution by the way. :) I am always amazed when I visit the "Miami boat ramp" channel and see how many of our motorboat friends seem to have never heard of such tools. Preferring to have their bikini clad crew or some brave soul standing in the bow balanced only with a semi-taut bow line, just try to grab a piece of dock or a pylon and hang on for dear life or limb. :P

That channel is great for hours of amusement.

And YES, why have they never heard of a boat pole?

Great solution! I have done similarly on my 26S, but just inside the salon directly underneath the entry from the cockpit. Actually, I don't use it much, but when it is needed it is always close at hand.
The key to inner peace is to admit you have a problem and leave it at that.

Were I not at an advanced age and had a bit more entrepreneurial energy, I'd buy a couple dozen boot hooks and go there and set up a "boat hook concession" just to see what might happen! :D

I have always kept our expandable boat hook in the cabin, vertically, next to the companion way steps, port side. It doesn’t move while underway. If, while in the cockpit, I suddenly need it, it’s right there at the cockpit. I just reach in, and it’s there, right at the cabin entrance, port side, sticking up and easy to grab.

Maybe they don't need boat hooks because they have bikini clad crew... :D

Since the topic of boat hooks has come up, I thought I would share a new boat hook that we found that the Admiral really likes for snagging cleats and pylons as we dock and undock. It has a rubber coated wire loop on the end together with a rubber coated point for pushing off another boat or dock, plus, the hook itself.

Hi Herschel

Interesting option!

We’ve tried a line loop option attachment to a standard boat hook to capture cleats and pilings.
It worked reasonably well.
On caution though…once you do snag a piling or deck cleat your pretty much locked on.
This can be a “good thing / bad thing” sort of characteristic.
Good thing it captures the target.
Bad thing if you change your mind and want to release in a hurry.

Currently we’ve pretty much limited it to when we have no other option but to snag to a piling.

Best Regards
Over Easy 😎😎🐩🐈

I can't get a photo of my boat hook mounting right now, but here's an old photo that shows the bottom of it. I just used a simple push-in clip (the kind you'd use for a broom) at the top, and a the bottom is simply rests on the cabin bulkhead. It's very convenient to have it here, since it can be grabbed even if the companionway hatch is in place.

I did the same thing as kmclemore. For the broom clip, I just used the same Command Hook broom holder mentioned earlier.

It works great. I can grab it from the cockpit easily, but it's otherwise out of the way.

We did a similar thing for boat hook storage on the cabin ceiling by replacing 2 of the screws that hold the channel for the companionway hatch with longer ones and adding simple stainless brackets to the inside. About $2 in materials. Also serves to hold one of our LED lights over the galley when needed. Will send a pic or 2 next time we're in the boat.
