Standing rigging check 09’ 26M

Post by Shane anthony »

Going over everything on a new to me 26M, everything looks as it should compared to the owners manual except. I have one cable with a broken strand and this forestay/headsail with two quick links. I haven’t raised the mast yet but was going to do so to figure everything out. Maybe the PO replaced the cable with one that was to short and all I’ll have to do is replace it with the correct size for the year of my boat? Is there any upgrades or things to be concerned about the stock rigging on the “M”? Thanks in advance for any help.

ANY rust or ANY broken strands = replacement.

Don't scrimp or cut corners on any of the rigging including the connectors. Use the right parts in the right place. Those carabiners don't belong there. They are adding additional points of failure.

The only upgrade I'd recommend is to get the heavier fore stay from BWY if you leave your mast up full time. The standard rigging is more than adequate for normal trailer-sailor use.

Some have replaced the bearing at the mast base with a ball-bearing upgrade. As I recall the opinion is mixed as to the usefulness of the upgrade. In any case make sure that the bearing and all of the associated hardware on the base of the mast are in working condition regardless of the style.

Don't forget to check the condition of the spreaders.

Good luck and congratulations on your new boat.

Agree w above. The standing rigging failure is catostrophic and so all single-points-of-failure on it need to be in perfect condition. I just upgraded to the bwyachts upsized forestay and it was measured perfectly by them and was a breeze to install thru my Flexfurler.
