No frills bow seat

Post by LordElsinore »

Part of the condition for my sister coming with me on a sailing trip to Flaming Gorge last weekend was that she wanted a bow seat so she could sit right up front. So i put together this quick solution. Not bad for version 1.0

I placed this scrap of 1 inch thick plywood sheet on the front of the bow pulpit, traced the location of the bars underneath onto it with a sharpie, drilled some holes and used some 1 1/8" stainless u-bolts to secure it down. Cut out a curve with a jigsaw to prevent the jib furler from rubbing on it, and used a throwable cushion on top.

She liked it a lot! We only used it in light winds and low heel and never when motoring. In the future I plan to sand the rough edges, stain it and coat it with epoxy, and maybe cut a slot in it so that the mast base can pass through it when attaching for trailering. For now, I just remove it pretty easily

Nice. Looks comfy. Would be a great seat at anchor too.

As you know, bow riding is illegal (under power).

I like it! Great start to something more.

If left with only a clear coat on top, leaving the woodgrain visible, that should be an approved "plank to walk", if needed. Maybe?

It's already been used as a diving platform, so definitely multi-use! Everything onboard has to have multiple uses, right?

Okay...so I had to google Flaming Gorge. Wow! What a beautiful place to sail.

And......google says it's 410 miles south of here. I've never taken my boat out of state, but wow, maybe I should tow her to some other places.

Yeah, it is a pretty place. I had not been there since I was very little. Lots of people also raft the Green River below the dam. Some serious world class fishing there too.

It is a pretty big reservoir and has some similarities to Lake Powell with long red cliff canyons, but Lake Powell is much BIGGER. (42,000 acre surface vs 161,000 ). Flaming Gorge has green forest on many of those red cliffs though, which is interesting contrast. The Wyoming side and the Utah side are somewhat different, with the Wyoming side being more open, desert-like and covered in sage brush instead.

The owner of a 26M named "Galactica" made a set of videos of his trip to Flaming Gorge several years ago. Part 1 is here. He drove all the way out from Missouri to go there. His channel has videos from trips to Lake Powell and other destinations as well.

One thing that is cool about Flaming Gorge is that there are several "boat-in campgrounds" that can't be reached by car. There are docks there you can tie up and pitch tents etc. Not needed when you can sleep about your boat like we can, but it was nice to tie up, hike around, do a little boat work and empty the toilet. There are also a couple different marinas on the water.

That's definitely one of the big advantages of our MacGregors! The ability to do just that

Love the hammock. I had one hooked up like to the mast raising bail and the furled up jib sail last weekend as well, though only while at anchor

Instead of the furled jib sail, I hooked the hammock to the bow pulpit. Helps stop “bottoming” out when under sail. :D

https://eaglesnestoutfittersinc.com/col ... st-hammock

I did not use the bale for the MRS, i thought it is to high. I used the cleat on the port side of the :macm: mast using the Jib halyard and tying a bowline to attach the hammock (see photo). A less steep angle for the hammock.

If I want a slightly higher location on the mast, I wrap the halyard once or twice around the mast, and then up and over the wrap between the mast and the lowered halyard, and then fasten to the hammock.

The other end of the hammock I attach to the bow pulpit where the mast fastens for towing.

Now, with all of that being said, what LordElsinore has created, gives a far more thrilling ride. WILD :!:

Doug hasn't been on this forum in a while, but he has used his Mac to the Max. He bought a big keelboat but still uses his Mac for exploring new sailing.
His channel now has a 29 day explorations series. A true inspiration.

I forgot he went to Flaming Gorge. Going to have to watch them again.

I think I would bolt handles to either side of that plywood seat - to handle he ups and downs of wakes etc we cross. :D

Handles were part of the original plan, but it turned out that it's easy to grab onto the sides of the seat and hold on that way. I may still add some, but so far I haven't missed them
