Hull speed after cleaning hull

Post by 133bhp »

I thought my hull was clean after cleaning the grass from the water line end of summer. It felt a little slimely at arms length below but figured as less light there, thats all it was. I also seemd to be getting nowehere saling during the sumer, would'nt tack, seemed to be stuck at 4 knots'ish. generally getting frustrated.

When I pulled it out, I was shocked the level of growth, particulaly in the CB box, hard and soft grwoth jammed in there. But having cleaned it up, I'm finding the speed and handling has resturned.
Probabaly no news to experiened owners, but I am surprised the effect of growth how quick in the sun it can grow, as little as six weeks, even in the grotty north sea.

quck phone vid showing bits bombing along at in or aroud 7+ mph in a beam reach/14knot wind, was like this for a 13miles round trip.

We have spent up to 2 weeks at a time in rivers which have agricultural run off going into them...read nutrients....not sure but locals reckon it makes the marine environment grow ie stuff that grows on hulls....can attest to the rate of growth in 2 weeks but probably also related to water temp???We beached our MacX and rubbed the hull down after a week and it was like sand paper...our Mac has had antifoul at one stage many moons ago and still bleeds blue when sitting for long time

After 6 weeks in the water here, my boat couldn't get over 8 knots at wide open throttle because of the forest growing under it. After cleaning it was back up to 18 knots.

More than 6 days in the keys on no hull paint will get a tiny buildup of marine barnacle growth.
One can do 2 weeks but powerwash hull after trip.
All Mac. left in Salt waters over 2 weeks, require a Bottom epoxy barrier min. 3 coats. Than Marine Anti Foul Paint for your area.
Gelcoat absorbs water, reason for epoxy barrier coating.
Mastreb, know you have this info and just extended it to others who may not beware.

Oh yeah, that will slow you down big time - (another reason i always put 'boat' on the trailer). Bottom paint helps - we had to put bottom paint on the old A23 but the bottom paint itself stole about 1/2 a knot under sail and a full knot under power.

One of the reasons 'boat' is so fast is because the bottom is like factory new - not a scratch. How is this accomplished?

With a creeper - the same kind they use to creep under cars - yes, I get on the creeper and clean the bottom with Collinite number 920. I do it whenever I feel the slightest bit of scum developing on the bottom. We went out about 14 times this year and I only had to crawl under there twice - not too bad.

It makes a HUGE difference.

Yep, after this experience I had to have the boat hauled out, cleaned by a boatyard, epoxy barrier coated 3x and ablative painted 2x. $3000 lesson that would have been cheaper if I'd done it in advance, so do yourself a favor and take Dave's advice BEFORE you keep your boat in salt, not after.

Just pulled the Lazy P after 9 months in the bay. Had used petit hydrocoat last two seasons, was ok but by the end growth was quite fast and needed scrubbed every 2 weeks. Used cukote before it which seemed a bit more effective.

Hmmm...Just removed the seafood buffet and went with blue antifoul this time... Blue paint does double the speed of a hull right :?: :?: :?:

I roll lanolin grease onto the underwater part of the hull prior to launching in tropical saltwater, all it took was a quick pressure wash to clear any growth that had stuck but that was only where it had rubbed on sandbars and cleaned some off but there was still enough residue left to stop major infestation.
Don't know whether the lanolin slows the boat down initially but it sure slows down after two weeks in the tropics without it and takes a lot longer to clean.
Must admit this year even after 10 weeks on the water there was less growth than normal but the water was more dirty and brackish most of the time rather than good clean saltwater or at least 50-50.
Even after pressure washing there is still a residue that sheds water and it's not shiny clean but will still roll some more on next salt water trip but our next trip will probably be in the Murray again (fresh) so won't bother as slime strips off easily.

Hi BobLee!

Hope this finds you well, happy and sailing your Mac as much as you can!

The use of lanolin grease is a new one to us! The results you describe are great!
We’re gonna try this on our small runabout sometime!
Thanks for the suggestion!

Best Regards,
