Internal Halyard Upgrade

Hi all, new member of the boards and new owner. Purchased a 98 vintage that had been sitting outside in a sorage yard for the last three years. Have been going through the boat replacing various things that fall apart or need attention after a long storage, including ordering a complete set of running rigging. While I'm waiting for the UPS guy to deliver that, I've been considering the kit linked above to move the halyards inside the mast. Go about half-way down the page, and you wull see this listed as "Internal Halyard Upgrade"

Does anyone have experience with this kit or a similar system??

's have floatation in the mast. I believe 'x do too, but can't be sure...

Thus, you'd have to remove that floatation...

While that may not be a big deal to you, I wouldn't bother...

There are alot of other things I'd rather spend the money/time on...

On the internal mast halyard issue, I would honestly not mess with it at first. What's the fuss on 1 or 2 halyards running up the mast? I would spend the money on some other must have improvement.

Internal halyards sound like a Charlie Foxtrot to me...but if anyone on the board has tried them Im sure you will hear!!

I have a lines led aft on my project list for this fall.

Seems like most think it's a layer of complexity with little benefit. Cool, I can use the dollars toward another mod/repair/upgrade.

DLT, don't think the X has flotation in the mast, or at least I don't. mine is 100% hollow, top to bottom!!

Catigale, I am absolutely running the halyards back to the cockpit, as a matter of act when I ordered my new lines, I specified the additional length, so I'll work on this over the coming weekend.

I agree - little benefit, much aggro. There's LOTS of other mods that you'll enjoy more or that will give the boat better performance.

Best bet is to contact a couple of locals who have Mac's and have them over for a beer... let'em look at your boat and give you their suggestions on what to mod, and then you and the Admiral decide what you really need/want/like an how deep of a money pit you want to dig.


And Hiram, you're right, there's no flotation in X masts unless a DPO put it there.

.....some of the other disadvantages of internal halyards.... large holes in the mast to weaken it, there will be places on the halyards that are not readily visible for inspection in regular usage, inside the mast, -- some concern about the sharp points of screws re. cleats, and possible fraying from the rivets at the spreader fitting, and stay hounds.

There is really no need about hiding the halyards, but if you mean moving the halyards to the cockpit that is really a necessity that I believe macgregor should have solved a the first beginning. My 98 did not even had sailslugs:) So after installing the slugs I did the following mod.
At the end you face a little problem about reefing but can be solved easily in various ways.

There is something inside my mast. When working on my steaming light I clipped the wire close to where it came out of the base of the mast and the end got sucked into the mast. I guess it was under too much tension. When I tried to dig it out I just pulled out stuff that looked like insulation.

BTW, my favorite is FUBAR.
