I would be pretty surprised if the Honda was that much better at WOT, especially since it's carbureted.
Hi Chip,

I made a long and fast motoring trip last year where I did 80 miles in about 5.5 hours of near WOT speed (I always tend to back off a bit from full throttle for a normal cruise speed) and used about 21 gallons of gas. This would compute to around 14.5 mph average speed with a fuel consumption rate of about 3.8 gallons per hour. As you may recall, I have the 2000 Merc BF 50 which is a carbureted 4-stroke. Obviously, on a long trip like that I wasn't always going exactly the same speed so there is some deviation to the average. Range of speeds was usually between 12.5 to 16.5....and, my hull did have some growth on it at the time so I'm wondering if I could have done even better with a clean bottom.

Hey, watch it Bill...my bottom is clean. I'm always able to get all the barnacles off with a paint scraper every morning in the shower :P

ETEC 90

Post by Spirit of the Wind »

I went with the ETEC 90 with no regrets. It has tons of torque. 26 MPH with one person aboard and only drops to 25 MPH with four aboard. Top speed with the Mercury 50 4 stroke was about 15 - 17 MPH depending on conditions and loading. Gas mileage is about the same as the Mercury 4 stroke I replaced. About 4 MPG at 22 MPH, almost double that at displacement speeds.

Suzuki 50hp going over swells WOT 3.6mpg

Post by Robert »

I made a 35 mile trip (Drum Inlet to Okracoke) twice, once with the Solas 4 blade 11.8 dia. 9 pitch and once with the Solas 3 blade 12.25 dia. 9 pitch with slight extra cupping. Both trips were almost entirely WOT on the Suzuki 50Hp outboard. Speeds were 13mph to 17mph up the swell and 18mph to 22mph down the swells, the trip took just over 2 hours both times, full ballast, I always keep balast full on open ocean. Both trips calculated out to just about 3.6 mph.
..
The first time I did this trip, I was amazed how hilly the ocean is, and I was in the Navy. Nuclear powered 721 feet long and 70 feet wide boats don't go up and down the swells so much, unless it is a huge storm which did make the 721 footer go up and down the swells a lot. I only went through one storm like that on the ship, I remember feeling very sorry for the poor souls on the little 200 footers along with the battle group, they were very thrashed compared to my ship. Waves would go over our bow and splash around the fordeck while the same waves would make the little boats look like they were underwater except for the 2nd floor and higher superstructure. http://www.usslongbeach-assoc.org/
..
What the hull speed calculation for a 721 foot long boat?
