sea safety asside, how will you find safety from pirates?

Post by Robert »

I sometimes daydream about sailing around the world. I like to think about the technical issues of survival at sea, but I usually end up getting worried about how to protect myself and my boat from pirates. Even if I could navigate well enough and survive all the sea tests me with, I wonder about cruising into harm by other people.
..
Is it best to make the boat look so pathetic that no pirate would think it worth the bother to attack? But maybe they just want to get a boat to use in a suicide bombing. Or maybe I stumble upon their secret activities and they attack to preserve their secrecy.
..
Once in my Navy days the morning watch discovered a mast and sail draped across the sharp steel edged bow of my ship. Was that just sea debris or was it an night running sailboat with a sleeping crew that my ship tore through? The ship could not determine which it was, the ship was big enough not to notice runing through a small blue water sailboat, if the night watch is not paying attention.

Interesting! Ein Dopplegaenger.

One of the sensations I like about sailing is the smell of the sea. Even when it smells fishy.

If you are going to the trouble to re-enforce the hull, and the expense, maybe you should consider a Odin-Mast 28 motorsailer. Out inthe ocean I dont think the centerboard or mast would last more than a few hours if the weather getz violent.. Good luck...

Well, if you're serious, more power to you! Go for it. Feel free to bounce ideas off this board. There are a few people here with some seriously wrinkled brains...

But, understand that every so often topics like "sailing to Hawaii", or something similar, comes up. Since most of us have strong convictions as to the capabilites of these boats, that generally causes some degree of conflict. Often, it seems that the originator just did so to watch all that conflict...

So, most of us just cringe when we read something like that, whether we think it is doable or a bad idea...

The bottom line is that there are alot of people that will think you are crazy or just plain stupid. They'll let you know it. But, since you started this thing off with calling yourself crazy, what's the problem? Saying you don't have time to play with kids, is just going to fuel that conflict... So, if you want people here to take you seriously, shouldn't you take a more calm/civilized/tolerant tack? Yeah, most of your detractors won't. But, what are you here for, an argument or serious debate/thoughts? If you're here for the argument, then you are the troll you will be called...

If you put your mind to it you can do it. But, Anybody that crosses the ocean blue in a small boat will be ridiculed.

This started with the first true small boat voyage by John C. Voss (Spring 1901). His vessel Tilikum was a 50 years old 38 Northwest Indian (Vancouver Island) dug-out red cedar canoe. Her beam was 5-6. His journeys covered 40,000 miles. He was viewed as crazy.

All men dream, but not equally.
Those who dream by night in the dusty recesses of their minds
Wake in the day to find that it was vanity.
But the dreamers of the day are dangerous men
For they may act their dreams with open eyes
To make it possible!
