suzuki 50hp problems

Post by joe povey »

I have a 2001 macx, with a relatively new engine, about 35 hours on it, do all PM religiously, in good condition. Two problems, when going very slow to dead slow it often stall, and will not restart until it sits for a 1/2 hour. Also stalls too easily when dead slow switching to reverse and sometimes back to dead slow.., very crowded docking conditions and on the delaware River where tide, wind and current a bear. second problem is when out for a couple of hours under engine, and stop for a bit, it usuallly will not start until it sits for a half hour. Dealer useless, trouble id that warrenty void if I have anyone else work on engine, if I can find anyone with enough computer trouble-shooting equip and experience. Had it back to deale twice and not too sure if they did anything or not, but problem wasn't fixed, and dealer 2 hours away by road, 6 by water. Help requested.

Cheers!

Sounds like a tank vent problem or a slow speed/idle circuit clog or the idle is set too low. Make sure the vent is open on your tank.

Joe,
Sorry to hear that your problem continues, but not sure what to suggest!

Did you buy the boat from A-1 Sailboats?? Maybe they can suggest a different Suzuki dealer. ANY authorized Suzuki dealer is fine to maintain the warranty. My Suzuki did fine at low rpms in spite of an air leak at the tank, only stumbling or stalling at higher rpms (EFI motors, no carbs), but your problem is clearly different than mine.

The refusal to restart for a half-hour makes your problem especially different, but I just don't know what might cause it. Unfortunately, I think you really need a better Suzuki dealer, and it needs to be one where you can put the boat in the water and "road test" it with the mechanic aboard. One last suggestion is to phone Browns Point Marine at Laurence Harbor, New Jersey. They sell lots of Suzi parts over this internet, and I've been satisfied with their phone suggestions. In your case though, it sounds like a qualified surgeon needs to do the diagnosis.
