26d re-rigging

Post by cooper »

I have recently acquired a 1988 29D and need some advice on re-rigging. The boat over all is in good shape but I need a new mast installed, new lines and an out board. what is the largest HP I can mount on the transom? The input I am getting is from a guy who has no experience with McGregors (nor do I). In re-rigging the mast, mast lifting system and lines what are the most important considerations? I want to mount a roller furler jib (eventually)- what are the complications with that? Will a new 26x or M system work for the roller furler? ? Also regarding the mast- where can I get a mast cap either via the net or in Florida?
Thanks in advance for your patience if these are stupid questions but I am new to single hull sailing.

Cooper...
(a 29D ?), you probably refer to a 26D.
I would definately suggest experienced "on the spot" advice on rigging and tuning the boat for 1. safety, 2. sailing performance, 3. experience in the procedures.
I owned a 26S prior to my 26X, and you cant loose with good professional advice ! Rigging that fails when out on the water isnt a good thing.

Happy Sailing.

I'm pretty sure the 26-D, -S and -X rigs are identical, down to and including the sails themselves, but I'm not sure if you can still buy any of them. You may have to assemble from individual parts. Assuming the hull connections (chainplates, stemhead fitting etc) are sound I don't believe there's any reason a standard rig for any of these boats wouldn't be a bolt on, though you'd want to double check that the length of the stays and shrouds were correct. Ditto the mast raising systems for any of the boats.

The 26M rig is taller, and with the rotating mast and no backstay considerably different, though not sure you couldn't retrofit. Somebody retrofitted an M rig to an X about a year ago, but I don't recall that he ever reported fully on the results of his experiment.

Assuming you assemble a relatively standard rig, the CDI FF2 furler is the standard on all the 26 boats even including the M, should work fine and there is a huge knowledge base on this board to assist you. There's no doubt other furlers will fit, but then you're more on your own as there's not a lot of experience here with those.

Don't know about a mast cap. Perhaps some other boats had them. My X purchased new did not, nor can I recall ever having seen one on any Mac.

My personal observation is that the D is by far the fastest of all the Mac 26 boats. A friend recently outfitted his D with a nice full batten main and high tech, hank-on jib, and that boat is fast. Although the stock Doyle sails are adequate, if you have some extra bucks to spend, sails might be where you'd want to spend them.

I believe I've seen motors as high as 18HP on a 26S, but that boat was loaded for long term cruising (such as it is with a 26 foot Mac). If I had a D I might be tempted to go with two motors. Besides the biggest cruising motor I could fit, which appears to be what you're looking for, I'd also consider trying to find a nice used, say 2.5 horse 2-stroke at no more than 15-20 lbs to swap out for race day.
