Marinco vs Charles vs Hubbell Electrical

Post by PeteC »

I am getting ready to buy some shore power items (Cable, adapter, connectors).

Marinco is the most common (and expensive).

Sailnet carries both Charles and Hubbell at a cheaper price than the Marinco. I am wondering if any of these are cheap Chinese copies.

Does anyone have experience with these brands?

Hubble is a respected brand but I have no experience with this connector or the other brands.

twist lok marine connectors

Post by JRonUnderSail »

I just added built in power to my 26X. After suffering "sticker shock" at the local West Marine store, I went to a local farm supply store (Mills Fleet Farm) and bought a similar connector for 1/3 the price.
I mounted the connector in the front of the anchor locker, and ran 12 gauge flexible cable back to my GFI and breaker assembly. I thought that the easiest spot, since you're usually "bow in" at most docks. I used to own a Catalina 30 and always thought it silly to run the shorepower cable across the entire length of the boat.

Hubbell is a very high end supplier but can you find the water tight housings you need to go with it for less . Marinco is often on sale at Boaters World and the others . You'll just need to do some searching and watching or bite the bullet cause YOU WANT IT :)
Here is what I am being told ( every time I talk to my brother ) You'll be sorry you $#%&*^# ! I have used direct burial Malibu site wire its #14 for 12 volts odds and ends . I used no-ox on/in everything and I use shrink tube as well . I Have also used #10 commercial grade yellow extension cord for 110 power . Don who lives in Port Charlotte says this will not last when I get my boat down to salt water . That I will begin losing everything I put in :? He says this having a 30ft.Shamrock twin diesel's that he uses to go 30 to 70 miles out into the Gulf with weekly and having owned a 26 ft WellCraft that someone else had done a lot of work on that Don had to RE-DO ! He insist he is seeing things go bad that are stainless etc etc :? . He insist I rewire everything use ONLY Marine Tinned wire and Marine quality stake-ons and still use the no-ox on everything .
(This is getting long and I am sorry ) We have both been in the Electrical industry for 37 and 41 years respectively but . . . I have never really dealt with the salt water environment before . I have done a lot of electrical work on the island Cozumel. I have rewired and or repaired Cars Boats Motorcycles Homes and a Hotel and I seldom have a problem . He says the boats wiring (dive boats owned by a friend ) get rewired so often it doesn't have a chance to rot he may be correct on that one and that is why I quite helping to be honest .. Soooooo if I have problems as he insist I will. I will report back to this board but IF you follow my and a few others lead on this it may well be too late to help .
I sure hope that some of that made some sense .
