Pictures (embedding an Image)

Post by Jim Cate »

I notice that some posters to MPSD are expert in sizing and pasting or attaching pictures of their boats or of components they are discussing, all in the appropriate size and layout on the page. I'm not sure what I'm doing wrong, but I have not been able to get it right. I would appreciate some how-to-do-it "advice for Dummies" explaining the sequence of steps for pasting images in a note, in the right size and format, or attaching them. Is there a maximum pixel size to avoid? I have searched for past discussions, and didn't have much success, and if anyone can refer me to past discussions along this line it will be appreciated.

Some have advised downloading my pics on one of the free on-line image storage sites. - However, when I started to sign up for one, they asked for lots of information and made it clear that acceptance of their terms included a willingness to receive advertisements, notices, and the like from them and from other entities. - Since my email has been bombarded with spam from multiple sources, I didn't want to add another source at this time. (Think for a moment. - Are they setting up those sites out of the goodness of their hearts and in order to better serve mankind? - Is this really a "free lunch"?)

In any event, any guidance or suggestions (novice level) will be appreciated.

Jim, I have a web server for a web site so it is easy for me to copy photos to the server and do a HTTP reference to them from this site for display.

If you do a MOD to your boat, you can upload your photos pertaining to the MOD to the Mac Mods Page, and then also reference them within a post on the discussion board.

To reference a photo within a post that resides on either a web server of the Mac Mods Page, you use the following syntax in your post:

Image and the photo will appear in your post.

One think I would recommend is to start a blog at Google's free blog site and you would be able to upload photos there. You can set a free account up at http://www.blogger.com/start

Rich Boren built a blog on Google's blogging site and this is a good example of what you could do for free and post photos.

As far as giving out your email address to picture posting places and other crapola, I have a free (dummy) Hotmail account and I use that for such things. Spam-away, boys, I don't give a darn... I only sign on to that account once a month or so to ensure it doesn't get cancelled by those nice Microsoft folks. Otherwise, they can send all they like!

For my photos I generally use www.Photobucket.com - it's free, works easily, and automatically sizes the photos for me. However, if I wanna post something *really* big or a movie or something I just FTP it to one of my web servers.

Just one very slight correction to Randy's advice ... the "image" tags require a photo link, not just a URL link. This photo link will be a web address usually ending in .JPG, .BMP, or .PNG (rather than just .COM). Here's how to get that link.

Once you have chosen a photo host (Photobucket is mine, too) you must go there, open your photo, and rt.click to, "Copy image address." It is this image address which must be posted between the "image" tags. Then your photo will appear within your post.

BTW, Photobucket doesn't require any personal info that I've observed, nor can I cite them as source of any new SPAM. Their business model relies upon selling photographs, or other means than spamming you.

ETA: Hmmm - never knew that kmc!! :o
See Kevin's post below for even easier approach with Photobucket!

Actually, one of the advantages of Photobucket is that they already configure the BBCode tag for you! Have a look:

Just copy that string, past it in your posting, and done deal. Don't even need to use the [img] tags on this interface - the string includes the ones you need.

It's free. The only downside I can see is that others can potentially search and find your images. Don't upload anything you wouldn't want someone seeing and you should be fine.

Thanks Kevin, I signed up at Photobucket. In your honor, your photo was my first upload. It was painless to sign up. I use a secondary email account like you do when signing up for things.

That's very true. Now we're all going to have Kevin's mug shot as our image for our posts. Can you imagine? Kevin's everywhere.

But, on another note - I suggested that we have a repository of images we can all go to for viewing others' boat mods. Would you all be willing to give the album name for your images? I am.

Show my yours and I'll show you mine. mtc5

Another excellent thing i've noticed about photobucket, aside from having a storage capacity, is the other images posted contain some very wierd but creative art. The younger generation (fade back to the 'how old are you' campaign) is very creative indeed. There're a lot of self images that will certainly make you giggle, but some stuff there you'll never find elsewhere.

That's where I found my Al mugshot, my hero, but now I'll have to use Kevin's - kidding K.

I just bought a 250Gig ext hard drive to keep all the snaps of Bellaroo - clogging my pc.

Good question. - If it's totally free, why is Photobucket doing it? Is it a gift from them to mankind, out of the goodness of their hearts? Is there a free lunch after all?

Again, why are they doing it?

Jim.
